Hey guys, I've been visiting Volnation for over two years (since i moved from Knoxville to Los Angeles) and love the forums. I finally decided to make my own name so i can contribute.

It is my humble opinion that Eric Berry will be returning for his senior season.

First of all, The Berry family is not in as terrible shape as you all make them out to be. Plus his father has stressed getting your degree because you can't rely on football forever. Eric still needs to finish some credits. I took this excerpt from a govolsxtra article. Tackling 'T' question: Berry might be playing last game at Neyland GoVolsXtra

The Berry family has also stuck to the plan and hasn't addressed the future with him during the season, and his father James Berry also stressed this week that any issues at home have been overblown despite his short-term disability and mom Carol's being laid off a year ago.

"By no means are we leaning on Eric and telling him he's got to go and do something to help support us," James Berry said. "We've had a financial plan way before we would have thought about having Eric go out and do other things because we have other kids to raise. Eric's not the only kid we have to raise.

"It's not like we're saying, 'Once Eric gets there then we're just going to lay back and wait for Eric to support us.' By no means are we depending on him to do that. It's great that he has the opportunity in front of him to do well, but living is not hard for us."

Second, you all are saying you hope he leaves so he can make his money. I'm tired of people saying that is selfish to want him to stay. If anything wanting him to leave early is selfish. Sure players can get hurt, but look at AP. He was injured during his final season and still got drafted top. You look at bodies of work, not single years. Bradford backfired so bad because he had a wonderyear. If Berry had a career ending injury, which is rare, he would get five million and a wonderful career as a coach. If he leaves now he will probably be a top five pick. The difference in money between the first pick and the 5th pick is about 25 million guaranteed and another 30 on the contract. With Kiffin possibly revealing a WildBerry and a new QB coming in next year. Eric Berry could soldify himself as the number one pick, break the NCAA return record, and as an added bonus HE IS GUARANTEED NOT TO GO TO THE RAIDERS WHO HATE LANE KIFFIN AND ARE A PERINNIAL WORST TEAM. In fact, the odds would be good the Pats trade up and grab him putting him on a team where he can win since they have the raider's pick (which will be a top ten anyways). Mayo and Berry? I hate the pats, but that would be domination and my favorite defense.

Finally, College football is an experience that will never come again. The NFL is great, but it is a business. CFB is a passion. A senior season is something special, the class he came in with will have a bond that is not easily broken. It is a good omen that he did not run through the T on senior night, even if he did it as a jesture to the seniors. I doubt he would miss his last chance to do that. Eric Berry has a chance next year to do something our greatest didn't do. Beat Florida. Berry had a chance to taste the SEC Championship, and next year the playing field is very even. Floridas D will be heavily depeted and they will not have Tebow. Sure, We'll have a new Qb, but we have a deep rb stable and experienced WRs. Look what Kiffin did with Crompton in one year. Our defense will be even better considering how much experience our lower depth and freshman LBs are getting and the ranking of the d line coming in. Tennessee is primed for a great season next year, and I couldn't imagine Berry not wanting to be a part of it.

You can leave now as one of the greater players to play at Tennessee and have a loyal fan base whatever team you go to...or you can stay for one more year and become a legend. Besides money, Berry has no reason to leave and every reason to stay. Keep in mind staying one more year could net him an additional 55+ million.

When I think of players that should not have returned for their senior year, Jonathan Heffney always comes to mind.

  1. Take the money
  2. Invest wisely
  3. Live sensibly
  4. Finish college later

He cannot improve his draft position by staying, only hurt it.

Thank you Eric Berry, we enjoyed watching you play. Hope you will always have fond memories of your time at UT.

Good luck in the NFL

More money will be in this years draft buddy. There's a rookie salary cap in the 2011 draft.

well actually he would lose a lot of money if he didn't leave this year. next year they are thinking about adding a rookie salary cap which means he would lose out on about 15 million not make an additional 55 million. I would love for him to stay but lets be honest. there is no way any of us on here would miss out on 15 million dollars to play on a team that isnt in the hunt for a national championship. whatever EB does he has the support of all of volnation!

I believe that he will be back for his senior season. I think he is genuinely excited about this team, the new staff and what next year could bring. If you had a year left on a team that finally had some stability, focus, discipline, and was on the rise, wouldn't you want to come back? Plus an extra year with Monte teaching you, getting you ready for the next level wouldn't hurt either. Improves his chances of getting out there on a pro field and understanding things that much more, I think.

And, if he is as humble as he seems to be, I don't think a few extra million would sway him to leave early as apposed to waiting a year and dealing with a salary cap. Seems like he really loves playing the game, and getting paid for it would just be a bonus.

I think his chances of staying are much greater than everyone on here thinks. We will all find out soon enough though.

If he returns, i say fantastic. If he doesnt, ill still support him. I just get tired of people thinking they know whats best for him. Yes, he can make alot of money, but this guy loves UT football. Hes gonna make a ton of money in the future whether he goes or stays. Money makes a big difference in anyones lives, but some love the game more than what people think.

But I think he should also go, at the end of the year he is probably getting emotional about everything (senior night, could be the last time he plays at UT) he seems to be a very humble kid. 6 months tend to change allot of things expecially for his family, if anyone deserves the $ its EB. Thanks but no thanks, just come back and see us, we have enjoyed watching him play.

your money thing is off since guaranteed money now is always worth more than the possibility of money later. Plus, institute a rookie salary cap and he is out an 8 figure sum for playing for free one more season. He gets no benefit for staying.

Everyone talks money when ever this subject comes up...

I understand it, though I have one issue with it; if Berry is as good as we all think he will be in the NFL then he'll likely get at least two very lucrative deals playing for his respective team(s)--possibly three if he stays healthy.

I think we all agree that Berry is not only a heckuva football player but also very intelligent. So its very reasonable to think that he has a plan not only for the short term, but long term as well...which IMHO, wouldn't make his decision to leave as cut and dry as "look at the guaranteed money I can make."

I think his philanthropic endeavors in his hometown would be more of a factor, if he felt like something needed to be done now, and his signing bonus as a top 5/10 pick would be required to accomplish that. (There was an article written about a month ago about his desire to build a community center and outreach for youths in his hometown, due to all of the gang violence, etc.)

I've never met EB, nor do o have any inside info or sources, but I strongly feel that, of the criteria he uses to make his decision, $$ is not in the top 3...maybe not top 5.

JMHO....Happy Thanksgiving Vols fans!

I want whatever is in EB and his family's best interest.

I agree. We shouldn't second guess whatever decision he makes.

Many people have stayed and enjoyed an extra year of being a student-athlete with great success. On the other hand, if he feels it's time to take that next step, then we should extend a hand of thanks and say good luck. No one knows better than EB himself what the right decision is.

If he goes pro, I'll try and keep up with him in the NFL. But there's been a lot of talk about an NFL lockout, and I'm not sure if it's '11 or '12. I would love for EB to stay, and be a thorn in every one's side again. Also to break that record he was surely going to do this year.

Hefney should have gone because he was a Sam Bradford wonder year, but was never a true star player. He never made All-american (which Berry has been for three years now). Adrian Peterson is the only comparable player if EB were to be injured. I will support either decision, but i don't think EB is about the money (i just used that as one of my points because all of you make a big deal about it.) Unless EB has a career ending injury he will still be a top five. This guy is Sean Taylor and Ed Reed's bastard child with the character of Abraham Lincoln. Berry will get a fat second contract, either way he's gonna get his money. I know most players would trade a huge paycheck for a better team. Brady took a paycut to get the WRS, Brees took a pay cut to get the right defensive coordinator. Eric Berry should stay one more year and finish his degree while helping UT win the SEC Championship. I saw on here that Tenn isn't in the hunt for the NC, but what you forget is the SEC has won for the 3 years (possibly a 4th) if Tenn loses one game to Bama next year then beats them in the SEC game, we would go to the NC. And that is a very possible scenario. Tennessee has never been untalented, we just didn't have the talent all the way down the roster. This year has built depth, and more will come in next year. He has been a leader on UT for two, and i doubt he would leave his friends and teammates to fend for themselves. You will be suprised by next season, and EB will be there.

Read this Ryan Mallet, Eric Berry Eye NFL Rookie Salary Cap

Will Eric Berry Return for his Senior Season at Tennessee?

The debate of who is better, Eric Berry or Taylor Mays, is over ... Eric Berry is the best safety in college football; perhaps since Ronnie Lott. Berry has a season of experience in the Monte Kiffin Tampa-2 defense and is a valuable commodity to any NFL defense.
The only reason Eric Berry should return for his last season for the Vols would be to capture the interception return yards record.

Eric Berry has absolutely nothing left to prove other than capturing the interception return yards record. While Berry is the epitomy of a team player, he is within 20-feet of breaking this record ... yes, it is that close. The question is: is breaking this record worth $16-$20 million to Berry? Yeah, we do not think so either.

Eric Berry has family to consider as well. As reported in the Knoxville News Sentinel, Eric Berry's father was laid off over a year ago ... the money an NFL contract would bring could help Berry's entire family immediately. Of any SEC football player that I have ever witnessed, Eric Berry is the 'one' ... the team player that every coach desires, but so few end up with. For every five-star safety that a coach can recruit, the Eric Berry in the class is one-in-a-thousand.

He's staying, today we had diner and he asked for the last leg from the bird. And I said one more year and it's yours! He said that was a heck of a deal!
EB good luck in the pro's. WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU BACK ON THE HILL NEXT YEAR. IF NOT, TITANT BLUE WOULD LOOK GOOD!

This may sound absurd to many on here, mainly because it sounds absurd to me, BUT.... I remember watching Eric in the Heisman videos, and he seemed very excited and determined to win it. And based on some factors, maybe next year could be his year...? He'd be more than a legend, for a school that means so much to him and his family.

call me selfish, I want him to stay. But if he goes I sure hope the TITANS can get him.
