Why don't we have better QBs on the bench?

JG does well in spurts, which is just not good enough to play with the big boys every game. We are an elite program but you wouldn't know by the last few years. What is wrong with us if we can't go back to the bench to get a better QB? Shouldn't we have one or more in reserve?
Poor coaching and recruiting

Ridiculous thread op. We don’t know what we have one the bench. Nobody other than JG has taken a snap this season. We don’t know what the others can do. Maurer without a doubt is way more athletic than JG. And we all know what bailey accomplished. Pruitts handling of to qb situation is his greatest weakness as a head coach. If he’s unsuccessful you’ll look back on that one aspect and think what might’ve been had he recognized the significance of great qb play and the willingness to rotate there until you find a great player.

Are we sure that JG is a great practice player and that is why he starts? After 7 years of him falling apart in real games, shouldn’t the coaches realize it? Watching JG tells me one of two things:
1) Our coaches have not spent the time to develop the backups,
OR
2) Chaney and Pruitt just decided to ride or die with JG. Yesterday they died with him.

I thought I used to be able to rationalize CJP's reluctance to sit JG when he didn't perform the way he might in practice, thinking it would allow him to gain confidence, but things that might work with a talented QB just don't work with JG...his mental model of the game is all wrong and will never improve

Our O-line did NOTHING to help. They knew we couldn't run the ball after the first few series and basically decided the line couldn't block on pass play's either so what we saw is where we are when it comes to playing with the big boys. I hate it !!!! JG waits way to long to decide what to do with the ball when they bring pressure. If you have not released the ball in about 2-3 seconds you better have a plan B quick and there in is the problem he doesn't have a plan B. I have never been one to talk bad about a young man but he looks at one guy and he will wait and wait for him to get open and if he doesn't it is to late to often. I hope they can work on maybe getting a couple of younger guys some reps because the future is on the bench not on the field at this point. Weinke really needs to do a better job, 3 or 4 years of work is enough time and you should expect much better results..
For the most part, JG had clean pockets to throw in until they started sending multiple blitzers on pass plays. They were run blitzing, all game. The delayed blitzers on pass plays killed us. Every pass play should have a check down.

Because it's Tennessee
Pretty much. Ky can bring in a freaking running back, and even teams like Georgia has to scheme around him. Amy team can start a freshman and give teams fits, despite who they are. Us? Our oline and 5th year senior can't do nothing. Blows my mind.

I am glad Coach Pruitt didn't play a different QB. JG is tough as nails. The way the OL blocked they would have gotten Baily killed. Seriously, JG is not a great QB but no one and I mean no one could have played great with our OL play yesterday.

It doesn't blow mine anymore. I expect it.

I dont know if he will stick around. Pruitts handling of the QB position is rather bizarre right now. You can be sure other teams are whispering in Harrison Baileys ear as well.
Assessing the quality of Vol QB coaching at this time if I were Bailey I would be definitely be scanning what possibilities would be for transfer in the Spring.

Helton is a big, big reason our QB room is so bad. The guy couldn’t evaluate QBs and set us back a few years. He should have been fired the instant he suggested we take that transfer from Stanford.

Yep !!!! I believe there are at least 3 if they had been given a fair chance.
Pruitt is dying for one of those guys to overtake Pruitt. They can’t, because two of them are terrible and one has had fewer practices in the last year than JG has had games.

This. I see it every year, freshman start and wow people, change the team. Yet for some reason, we never have that.
We had it last year Joe. BM had taken the job fair and square before his injury. It really seems to me that Pruitt hates every QB on our team except JG . SMDH

I do believe you misunderstood the question. It was rhetorical. The point being is that we should always have someone on the bench to come in to provide some type of relief. No doubt our guy was in trouble. Like someone posted, he should have sat out for a few series to get his head back in the game. It should be no effort to put a replacement in when needed.

Somehow Butch Jones (gross) was able to have on his roster 2 qbs that were drafted and one that spent time on the Bucs practice squad. We supposedly can't develop one that's a tiny bit better than JG.

Not sure it's relevant but our qb coach is the guy the Rams ran off because he couldn't get Goff to lace up his cleats correctly.

Meanwhile the guy that put about 8 qbs in the NFL isn't our qb coach
