I've been wondering about this for a while, during an off week, I'll ask.

I would like penalties to account for lost points as well as to properly account for total yardage differential, not just the base amount, but also consider the out come of the play(30 yrd TD run, flagged for holding the stat line looks like 1-40-6).

I don't think dropped passes should count against a QB but no way should penalized yards be counted in any way.

Problem here is you are attributing a penalty as the reason a potential gain was lost without considering the penalty may be the only reason there was a gain.

10 yard out pass, the WR kicks the DB right in the jimmy and horse-collars the guy to the turf as the QB throws the ball. WR catches the ball, taunts the injured DB with a throat slash gesture and then runs 90 yards for a TD.

Now, the field looks like a laundromat vomited the day before Easter. You want the stat line to read 1-95-6? There were in fact 4 penalties in my silly scenario, at least three of which directly caused the team to even have a 90 yd TD pass in the first place. There is no TD without the personal foul, horse collar, and offensive PI (any one for that matter).

Contrast this with the situation where a WR on the opposite end of the field lines up 1 foot too far back and an illegal formation calls back a legit 90 yd TD pass.

That's exactly what I was thinking, except the original line of scrimmage was the 15 so it would the stat line would be 1-97-6.

Not really I was thinking of all the times a penalty has cost more than just the "base" yards.

The punt return against A&M is really what got me thinking, 1-15 would be the line, but it cost us way more, and Kamara was past him and the block was unnecessary.

Penalty yard have been counted for as long as I can remember. I'm just saying that if a team has TD called back for a penalty that had nothing or everything to do with the success of the play it would be interesting to know that stat.
