Why dont fans support this program no matter how bad the times get?

Why do so many fans have to be fair weather fans and only support a program when they are winning? I think if you are a VFL you will support this team and program no matter how many games they win.
We have standards? If you were born before 2000 maybe you would understand what this program is capable of, if we have good leadership?

You've already taken a verbal beating and I don't want to pile on - but to draw an apology, parents are sometimes faced with having to cut off kids who have, for example, an addiction problem. It doesn't mean they no longer love their kids - it's tough love that is necessary - ultimately to help the child. I don't doubt at all whether the vast majority of highly frustrated fans are actual fans, or think that they're fair-weather fans. At some point you have to voice the disapproval, the unwillingness to tolerate abject incompetence, and withhold the dollars - or it never gets fixed.

I also think people who want everyone to be happy no matter how ridiculously bad the product on the field is are just milquetoast.

I am a little schizophrenic about it, though. More and more I keep thinking there's more to life...

Good Grief. I assume you're trolling, but just in case:

A lot of us are VFLs, but the complete and utter incompetence of the admin over the last 15 years has robbed the sport of the fun. And in the end, it's gotta be fun to be a fan, at least a majority of the time. You can have fun even in a loss, if its a good game and your team is playing well.

Tennessee has become a drudgery to watch, especially with Slingblade Skoalcan and his infatuation with JG. We all have jobs, responsibilities, a lot of things we HAVE to do. Tennessee football isn't a HAVE to do, it should be a WANT to do.

So, don't play the "I'm a Better Fan" BS card. No one buys that here. We are all fans, its just that most of us demand that our team and admin care at least as much as we do. Ideally, they care much more. That hasn't seemed to be the case for quite awhile.
Well done sir.

OP, brother, try to understand the other person's perspective...

When you're appendix is inflamed which option supports your health: Letting it rupture, or having it removed?

Removing the inflamed appendix IS supporting your health.

Can't be fair weather.
Because it's about to get Ice Cold in Knoxville 😎

There’s no question that his defensive acumen is off the charts, but X’s and O’s aren’t all that important when it comes to being a successful head coach. The list is rather long of great offensive and defensive minds who have flamed out as head coaches.

To this point, Pruitt hasn’t shown really anything to give people confidence that he’s the long term solution. A lot of his staff hirings look questionable, at best. Before this season His recruiting had been good, but not good enough to catch up with the big dogs in the conference. Now of course, this year’s class is starting to look rather shaky. And, as I’ve been harping on for his entire tenure here, his game management skills are atrocious. He has no idea when to use timeouts. He has to call timeouts coming out of a time out. Both sides of the ball have substitution issues.

And all that doesn’t even cover the actual on the field results, which haven’t been good. His lame brain excuse for not kicking the field goal against Arkansas was a fireable offense and gave off the impression that he’s in over his head. Maybe he can turn it around, but to this point there’s nothing to suggest that he’s going to be a success here.

I've heard, "It isn't the Xs and Os, it's the Jimmys and Joes" too much. About Damn time we pony up to the truth. Both are important.

I suppose that supporting the program means different things to different people.
For example, I love my children. As a matter of fact, I love them too much to let them act like (insert description here), so I administer corporal punishment when needed.

And so, some fans are just as die hard as you or anyone else, but they can't sit idly by and watch their team go down the toilet, without complaining about how bad it stinks.

I'm not arguing with you, or challenging your fandom or anything ... just answering your question.

I take people at their word.

Fella starts a thread asking who everyone is going to root for now, and he declines to change it to blue font because he's serious, I'm going to take him at his word that he's actually in the market for a new team to follow.

Other folks in the same thread who talk about the teams they're backing now--college football teams, not talking about switching to hockey or basketball--I'm going to take them at their word, too.

On top of the folks here* who have admitted shifting loyalties, I've got one extended family member (child of a cousin; guess that makes her a 2nd cousin or a 1st cousin once removed, or whatever that is) who announced she's "changing teams". She's young, though, hoping she gains character and a stronger value set (like loyalty and perseverance) as she matures into adulthood.

So, yeah. Fair-weather Vols fans do exist.

* idk if they're still here. But they were here at the time that thread ran its course. Maybe they're gone now, to ohiostaterules.com or clemsontigersaredashiz.net.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a "second favorite team" or other teams you enjoy watching. It's not like one game fills an entire Saturday.

I love the Vols, they are my team and have always been for as long as I've been watching football (well college, I was an NFL fan as a kid in the early to mid 80's, then starting liking the college game better). I bleed orange ... reason I know is I've been bleeding for over a decade now.

That said, there've been many a Saturday that would have been either boring or maddening if I only pulled for UT. But, because I enjoy some other teams too, I was able to watch other games with a certain emotional investment, and, well ... at least all my teams don't lose every Saturday!

I don't think you can say he's going to be a bust just yet either as it's too early in his career. Recruiting he's been the best we've had since peak Fulmer. His 1st class was thrown together last minute before we even had a full staff I believe, 2nd class has been great considering we were coming off the worst 2 seasons in our programs history, his 3rd class we simply don't know because of Covid and the restrictions that has caused that class to go through, hell they didn't even know if they were going to get to play the football season so I'm not going to judge this bunch until I see them get the same opportunity to develop as the previous 100+ classes before them. This year isn't a wash but I'm not going to judge him much on this season. I'm fully aware that everyone else went through the same stuff but I contend that not every situation was the same. 50+ players missing 14-21 days of preseason camp had to effect this team, Trey Smith, Thompson, Alontae, Shamburger have all been injured or in Shamburger's case MIA. Morris, our starting LT, FR All-American, reportedly missed 21 practices alone due to contact tracing, oh yeah, he's coming off hip surgery as well. Henry T for some reason dropped 15 lbs in order to play SEC MLB at 225 lbs and we evidently only have 1 experienced WR that has played and got to practice enough to know what routes to run and then actually catch the football when it hits him in the hands, we might have 2 if you count the young FR Hyatt who has played well at times. I think all of these played a role into our season so far, a season which hasn't been determined yet. I want to see how he finishes the season this year and what will we look like this time next year. He's just too well respected as a talent evaluator and coach among his peers to give up on him this early under the circumstances he was put in. Can you imagine trying to compete in the SEC in '18 without a single upper classmen NFL prospect on the roster? Today I think we have several NFL prospects he developed and I think that number will continue to grow the longer he's here. And lastly, maybe he knew Cimaglia was hurt during the Arkansas game and he thought that drive would be our best chance to score the TD part of the 11 points we needed. It certainly looks bad to this point but an upset Saturday would go a long way towards starting to turn it around, finish with a 4 game winning streak all of a sudden things don't look bad at all.

Oh, I agree, Preacher. I'm an example of what you mean: a Vol fan (first) and a fan of the school I attended, too. I totally get that. We're social animals, and can have a layered set of ties--personal, familial, geographic, social, cultural--to two, or several, college teams.

I don't think of any of that as a fair-weather fan. A fair-weather fan disavows the school he was fan of when it is not doing well. Simply chooses to cease to care about it or follow it. Won't follow it again until it's doing well. That's a totally different thing.

If I continued to support my alma mater during the Hamilton fiasco, the Davenport/Curry fiasco, and beyond, if I proudly wear my school colors to this day, you’ve neither the cause nor standing to question me. I’ve been on this earth a few more years than most, and that experience informs my wisdom. Your respect will be appreciated, and if you’ve not that to give, then be gone with you. GBO.

i will support for the Vols, but I will not spend another dime on merch .

I doubt that some of these NegaVols are even fans! The young fans think it's an easy fix and that you just pour money out by the bucket load for the quick fix thus they freak out if their simplistic thought isn't the 1st thing UT does.
There is no doubt that the NegaVols are not Tennessee fan. Their only goal is to get their as many people as they can to respond to their posts to make them look important when they really look like deserters in the army. If I had one of them work for me, they would not last very long. One could not rely on them to be loyal to your or my business.

You've hit absolute rock bottom when you start comparing anonymous posters on a message board with deserters in the army.

If you're business is heading in the same direction as UT football, any employee with drive and an IQ above room temperature won't need to be fired, they'd have already found a job with a successful company.

Now drop your "true fan" status. Get a grip gramps

I guess to some people if you question/criticize the coach or administration you aren't really a fan. To them "true fans" are like sheep and just swallow whatever is given them.
Thats how dementia pedo "pres" got support

We aren't just fans. We are also customers and customers do not want to invest in a bad product. You can call it fair weather all you want but if I'm not getting a return on my investment, whether it be financial investment, emotional investment, or investment of my time I'm not going to continue to invest. That's just common sense. IMO, it's the "die hards" that are the morons. The ones who are there no matter what. What exactly do you get out of watching us get our teeth kicked in every week? Do you get some kind of merit badge for enduring the abuse? Is it really worth it to you, to just be able to say "I WAS WITH THEM THE WHOLE WAY! THROUGH THE GOOD AND THE BAD!" Well good for you! Is the university going to reward you for that unconditional loyalty in some way? Are you getting free season tickets or free merch? Otherwise, I don't see the nobility in wasting your time on something that doesn't produce anything in return. Fans who walk away from a bad product, I don't see that as fair weather at all. I see it as common sense.

What the actual **** is this thread? Fair weather my ass. Fans have support this program for over a decade of pure garbage. What are you drinking OP? Being pissed off does not equal fair weather lmfao
