Why does Tennessee have such bad in-state talent?

One way to increase instate talent and loyalty to UT would be for the UT staff to put on free coaching clinics. Bring in all of the HS coaches you can for free clinics, teach them fundementals and new schemes (something other than the single wing).

Face it TN has some awfull HS coaches, alot of it has to do with the $$ paid and the fact most of the state is still clanish and wount change. I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've heard "that's the way my Daddy did it and worked for him" in the 20 years I've lived here.

THe only schools that have good talent in TN, dont emphasize education.

This is a load of crap....I would put Maryville and Alcoa educations up against the majority of public schools in the state. Those 2 programs and been consistently dominant for over a decade.

Farragut and Bearden both have good academics as well as athletics.

Ohio, Michigan, Penn, Illinois, and Virginia all have weather worse than Tn. All produce more talent.

I live in MO... Tn weather is VERY mild.

Those states probably all have larger black populations than Tennesee does.

Just checked-
u.s. black population

All of those states except for Illinois has a larger black population than Tennesee does. And does Illinois really produce more talent than the state of Tennesee?

the answer isn't very politically correct

Tennessee has about 6.5 million people and is the third most populous SEC state behind GA and FL. AL, KY, LA, and SC are all about 2 million less. MS has less than half that number. Tn's black population is twice Ark and 3 times KY. It is in the same neighborhood as AL and MS.

Even if you compare the number of blue chip players to the number of black people in each state, TN comes up short.

Basically what I'm saying is that even an apples to apples comparison makes TN look bad.

Yes, historically they have.... and for the record, Illinois has more black people than Tennessee. In fact, there may be more black people in Chicagoland alone than in TN.

I'd agree with what you said. Further, it wouldn't hurt for the long term if UT encouraged more of its players to "give back" by being youth and HS coaches.

Well said but also look at the population of football "hot beds"

California 37 million
Texas 24 million
Florida 18 million
Georgia 10 million
TN 6 million
AL 5 million

It is a numbers game excluding AL.

very good point......:hi:

Georgia has Atlanta
Virginia has Norfolk
Florida has Miami
Texas has Dallas
Louisiana has Baton Rouge and New Orleans
and then there are South Carolina and Mississippi who are predominantly African American states. California is just huge!
Where do the best athletes in Tennessee come from? Memphis, which is not a huge city but has a large African American influence. I will leave it at that.

SC and MS have 25% and 30% black populations IIRC. They aren't "predominantly" black. Memphis is a large city but its proximity to UT hurts. That's why I've consistently said that GA (in particular N GA and ATL) plus the upstate of SC are where UT's fortunes can be made talent wise. IMHO, SC plays the best quality of HS football in the south. They just don't have populations on par with GA and FL.

South Florida plays the best football in the nation, but South Carolina is one of the best.

i was told by a head football coach that he has recruited 28 players from tn. there were only 2 players left from tn since he has been coaching. the reason he told me was most of the players were mamas boy ,they had a hard time moving up to college. he recruited a mr. football player from tn. he was a great player in high school but lasted only 3 days.

This question does get ask often. A big part of the answer is a sensitive one. But certainly not a bad thing. i have a blog coming by Friday that lays it out. The fact is the state of Tennessee places a pretty good number of kids into BCS schools.

The problem is, Tennessee plays in the SEC and by that measuring stick, recruiting is a much more intensive job than a Florida, Alabama, Georgia, etc.

The question is a good one, fans want to know, but the real crux of the matter is how the Tennessee coaching overcomes it. We will discuss that also.

The biggest issue is coaching. Coaches in Tennessee lack the drive in sending out tape to get their players noticed by colleges. This leads to the fact Tennessee isn't known to produce a lot of talent. This leads college coaches not to look at the state of Tennessee for talent. I think this is starting to change slowly. The internet and youtube is making it easier for the players to get their own information out instead of relying on the high school coach. At my school I played at we had a 300 pound line man that could run a 4.9. He was a beast. He had a lot of mid major schools all over him, but never sent out his tape or took him to any big camps. This is one reason the smaller colleges in Tennessee are normally pretty talented. They take the talent that is over looked at by the bigger schools.
