Why-do-we-suck-at-rupp?

1. Kentucky is arguably the best basketball program in college history.

2. We are an historically mediocre (at best) program. Most years we're just simply nowhere near as good as they are.

3. The home field/court/ice advantage is probably bigger in college basketball than any other sport.

Thus we hardly ever win up there. It seems fairly simple to me.

Hey, I know it sucks. My first memories of UT basketball where when Ernie and Bernie were actually winning up there. The last three decades have been kind of a nasty shock after that...

I think that was the first year of Rupp, too.

Then there was Don Devoe.

I'm sure there are plenty of Cat fans who grew up watching them beat us in football...then the same nasty shock.

You have to admit, though, that if Mears wouldn't have had to retire because modern medicine was 11 years away from the breakthrough he needed, things with UK and UT may/would have turned out very differently.

Yeah, might have, except for that '78 NC team at UK. 79-82 were lean for UK, and LSU and Bama were the class of the SEC then, so yeah, definitely, if Mears had been around, they would have made some noise.

Then again, if Bear Bryant had stuck around at Kentucky....

The other night, UT was just tired from all those games, plus they looked flat and overconfident. When UK comes to UT, the Vols will blow them out.

actually everyone sucks at Rupp. Someone posted UK's home record and it was obvious that we aren't the only people losing there

The game that sums up the Rupp Arena curse for me happened during Tony White's senior season in the mid to late 80s.

As best I can recall, UT shouldn't have been able to keep up with UK in Rupp that year, but that game was back and forth through out. I think UT had the lead late, but UK went up with a few seconds left or tied it.

In the last moments of the game as UT was trying to inbound the ball, the officials called a charge on Tony White during the inbounds play. The rule is, or was, you had to allow the player a step towards the ball on an inbounds play, but the UK player pretty much stood in Tony W's jock before the play started. White moved toward the ball, the UK player flopped, and Tony was called for the charge. Devastating call and I remember John Ward and others talking about what a horribly wrong call it was. UK got the ball and scored and that was the game. We had em and the refs took away.

I was in high school then and a BIG time Tony White fan. I knew after the outcome of that game that there was some kind of curse on us in Rupp.

Same reason it's hard to win at neyland, Swamp, Doak Cambell, Cameron, the old Orange Bowl.........it's that the home team is great, or at least talented, and will defend their home to no end.

Why do teams in the Big 10 still have problems winning at indiana? Its not talent. its history and preception. Kids have a hard time going into a hostile place with serious tradition and play their best.

you, like me think the originator of the thread, should fix either his keyboard or typing style. Whichever would eliminate the hyphens.

Otherwise, y'all are typing some really long words.

There's also an actual rivalry between UK and UT in basketball, albeit a bit one-sided, but UK vs. anyone is pretty one-sided, historically speaking. Remember, UT owns more total victories over UK than any other school. It's a border war, as well. The Big Blue Nation gets motivated, even when their team is subpar, when the Big Orange roll into town. And you know the Cats were motivated; it's not every day that you get the #3 team in the country on your home floor.

In short, all the ingredients for the "trap game" were in place, and that's exactly what it was.

that's where paul bryant was when neyland was going undefeated against him, right?

the trap game excuse is weak in this case. the players should always get up for kentucky. that defeat still confuses me.
