Yeah, I’ve thought that since last year. That “quick hitter” straight into the defensive tackle is a waste of a down, IMO, and UT does it often. Seems like they prioritize speed over creativity, maybe trade them out for a screen or edge run every now and again.Such a waste of a play. It’s like the o/c or someone just draws a blank and calls it. I don’t get it. It needs to be taken out of the playbook.
Here is something. Not all 2nd and 8s are equal. After enough sample size early in that game. We weren't going to have a ton of time to throw past the sticks. Getting an occasional first on ground or at least 2-5 yards to make third down more manageable. And occasionally the over the top of the defense happens on third and short because defense anticipates what majority of offenses do run or short pass or bubble screen. So while the safeties come up to defend that one receiver has opportunity for the kill shot.
I am not sure there was anything that would have been consistent in that game. The crowd noise paired with Georgia's front four shift pre snap made our O-line jump and put in terrible situations. Compare that with the other games and those end and 8 runs you speak of worked for most part. Credit where credit is due Georgias defense was able to limit all our options at home.
This is the correct answer. If we pick up even a couple more yards then third down is much more manageable and opens the playbook. If we throw on 2 and 8 and it’s incomplete then the defense knows we have to throw it.Because we usually pick up 3 or more yards and that opens the playbook up for several more options. Heupel knows what he’s doing
If we had better backs and an OL full of 5-stars, the results of those runs would be more productive and consistent, IMO. Our OL has done a great job this season, but most of them are over-achievers. The talent gap was apparent against UGA, unfortunately.
