I don't get it. He was a Tennessee guy for a long while back in the 90's, and he was the OC in the only two decent years in recent memory for the Vols in 06 and 07 when they went 9-4 and 10-4.

And from 1993-1998 (6 years) when he was OC at UT, their record was 63-11, and they won the SEC 2 times.

Without him from 1999-2005 (7 years), UT went 61-26, so, a fairly significant decline.

Add into this equation the fact his success at Duke. The blue devils have won 9 games in 2 years.

Before that, they had won 10 games total in 6 years!!!

So why is there such a OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE attitude about hiring this guy?

Some people aren't wired to be a head coach in the SEC. Cutcliffe is one of those.

In addition, the guy was a HC at Ole Miss, so he has SEC experience and recruiting ties. And he was 44-29, (25-23) at Ole Miss, which isn't exactly a terrible record for that school. Also he was 4-1 in bowl games.

if you're satisfied with ole miss success under cutcliffe, then by all means, do it. just be sure to find eli manning's equivalent at QB first...

Do Peyton & Eli have any younger brothers?

It's not that fans don't like him perse, it is because he represents the Fulmer era way too much!

I like Cutcliffe, but I think he is not far behind Fulmer in having the game pass him. I'd rather have a young up and comer who wants to be here to create his own dynasty, but I'm not sure he's out there right now.

What has Cutcliffe proven? He can recruit and coach a Manning, twice?

The football program continues to go in circles by wanting to hire a guy that is nothing more than offshoot of Fulmer.

If he indeed is the hire, UT football heads into irrelevance as a program of keeping it in the family amongst its hirings for football.

We had the chance to once again go out of the box and get a hire who could bring some excitement and something new to Tennessee football and take us into the next area but what do we do? We go and hire somebody from the past and tell him to try to re-create 10+ years ago.

We all hate Lame Kitten but he did bring some excitement and promise for the future that Cutcliffe nor Fulmer could bring. Im so tired of the decision making by those in the Athletic Department.

There aren't any build a dynasty type coaches out there right now. Well, there are a few, but they are busy building dynasties somewhere else.

I swear, I thought UT would go after the Utah HC, but I hadn't seen it yet.

We need to flood MH's email and let him know how we feel. No more fulmer clones. Football has passed them buy. We still need younger coaches!!! Someone please get a petition ready to fire MH if this goes down. This cannot happen. If we are gonna have problems filling the stands. Ok never mind I found his addy. mhamilton@tennessee.edu here is the public relations email as well. utnews@utk.edu. flood there email accounts fellas!!!

First intelligent thing that I have seen you post on here, RNVol. Good work.

And it will probably be the last. If Cutcliffe is hired I am done posting about UT football, this would ruin my love for UT football that has been passed down though several generations and runs deep on both sides of my family.

He was also 2-0 against UF

Cutcliffe had one of the best offenses in the country in both 06 and 07...he's coached without a Manning before, and done very well.

He's basically a Fulmer that can't recruit. I don't want him at all. Especially if he brings his staff.

I don't hate Cutcliffe, I just think he's the wrong man for the job.

I'm fine with people not wanting him as the HC, however, using this "he's nothing without a Manning " is a bunch of bull****.
