Why do TN "fans"'leave games early?

I was just wondering if the fans that leave the game early when up or down by 10
points or so do these same fans when watching a game at home in the same situation turn off the TV and go mow the lawn or go to the mall? I never understood buying a ticket,
paying for parking, etc and leaving before it is over. I imagine a lot of them are there to get their Instagram picture or something. There is some satisfaction knowing these fans miss great comebacks like the SC game a couple years ago and the GA game this year. Anyways - I don't know so please enlighten me.

I will proudly say I have been to every game, except TAMU. Regardless of score, I have stayed till the fat lady sang her song. It's really sad to see our team performing well on Saturday, and with 10 minutes left in the 4th, to see the stadium half full. Oh well.

I just feel like it hurts the national perception of our program to have an empty stadium in the 3rd quarter. Im sure recruits take notice as well.

Personally I enjoy staying all the way through to watch the young guys get their chance and see what the future looks like. Not to mention celebrating the win with the team.

The players put in hours and hours of work and prep for these games, I would rather support them than get home an extra hour early. Jmo.

Luckily we have people like you to cover our retreat. Just yell louder. No one will notice.

There are a number of reasons why people leave early. I know that four of the people who live further than 100 miles have to get back to their homes to take care of their children or aging parents. We stayed until the end of the game and still sat in traffic for almost an hour, thanks to the brilliant new traffic plan which the Knoxville Police Department implemented this year. Some people have medical conditions which require timely attention which are difficult to cover in any arena where the event lasts for 4 or more hours. The rules for reviewing referees mistakes are taking longer and longer. Fans who bring young children have those children to fans who should be removed from the stadium but seldom or never are. Until the renovations of the South part of the stadium are completed, it is difficult to make it to a restroom and get back to your seats without missing a number of plays of the game. The parking for buses close to the stadium have been replaced with parking for individuals who hold 4-6 fans rather than buses which hold 50-70 passengers. The food at the concessions has gone from OK to really bad. The chicken tender i had Saturday where the worst I have ever attempted to eat plus the fries where nearly raw. I am surprised that more people don’t leave early.

If "chicken fingers" have anything to do with why a person leaves early, this is a bigger issue than I ever considered.

To leave early with a big lead is not as bad as leaving early when we are losing.

Very few leave a big game that's close too.

People left the Florida game early, but it seems they always leave early. There just isn't much football, so every game is big, but when it's an expected win, it becomes a no win situation. So we be Ky, so what? It's Ky. It's the same till the SECCG, then it gets real again. With Mo and Vandy, it's not will we win, it's by how much.

Plan D all the way to Tampa.

You may be on to something with the lesser opponent, cheaper ticket, family crowd theory for these end of the season games. I have to say, the UK game was one of the more tame crowds I've experienced at Neyland in a few years. I wonder if there'd be any difference in crowd noise and staying later had they won that USC game? That loss let some of the wind out of my sails as a fan. The first half of the season was nail-biting and heart pumping, only to be followed up by laying an egg with 2 weeks to prepare against an overall bad USC team.

The game was on SEC network at noon. "The Nation" wasn't watching. Also, what hurt our national perception was losing 3 in a row. After that "the Nation" no longer gave another thought to UT because we proved to be all hype. A "pretender" not a "contender".

The only time our national perception is hurt is when the stadium is empty because UT is getting its arse handed to it.

Does it matter? People pay for their tickets, pay for parking, pay for food, etc. They have every right to leave whenever they want. And I don't think that makes anyone any more or less of a fan than anyone else.

And this is coming from someone who goes to all the home games and stays until 00:00

I did for the first time ever this past weekend... I already had prior commitments but I got two really good free tickets dropped in my lap Friday night.... So the compromise to go was having to leave in the 4 th quarter. Otherwise I have been like you, super confused as to why anyone would pay that kind of money and not even see it through to the end

Yeah - I was just trying to figure them out. I still say the majority of them leaving early aren't die-hard fans. I don't understand people who insist on driving in the left hand on the Interstate either. I bet if asked them why they drive there they would say because they are taxpayers and because they want to.
