Why do our DBs and LBs consistently give receivers a 5-10 yard cushion?

That TD to the tight end was laughable - Rico was playing 6 yards off of him IN THE ENDZONE.

It has to be coaching because it is so consistent. Is the idea that we are so fast we can react quickly enough? Whatever the idea it is clear, and has been for a long time, that it does not work.

and if you look at ucla's scoring drive, they threw the ball right in front of our linebackers over the middle several times to keep the chains moving, we made no adjustments to stop them, and that is coaching. (bad coaching)

as for playing off the recievers, you hit it right on the head!

well the idea here is that by giving such a large cushion you prevent a long, game breaking play that results in losing.

oh, wait a minute, you said IN THE ENDZONE. OK in that case, well, uh, you give the cushion because, uh, that is the only way we know how to play it.

plus, our D was caught off guard by UCLA playing their third string QB and by them losing 3 of their starters on offense during the game due to injury. can't expect the D to play well when thrown a curve like that.

They found a hole in our defense, and our coaching

This is your brain on drugs.

i don't understand it either. we make bama's QB look great last year and now we made a 3rd string qb look great. maybe we should go into the self help business and charge teams to plays us because we can help any reserve qb gain self confidence after a game with us. purely pathetic.

actually it is my tongue in cheek reference to why we lost the 01 SECCG -- we were "caught off guard" when LSU lost their starting QB and starting TB and we faced some things that we "were not prepared for."

last night's game was deja vu, with a bit of the 00 loss to the dawgs thrown in for good measure (pooch kick giving great field position to start the drive, pre-vent D allowing dink and dunk down the field, uncontested pass for the TD).

We knew Riley was going to be their QB for a month. I may be confused with what point you are making.

in 01 one of the excuses for the loss to LSU was that we were "surprised" by the LSU backups. i was offering the same (lame) excuse for this loss (UCLA lost three offensive starters during the game due to injury) although including the QB is a stretch as you are right he was known before the game.

We played the same defense all last year, and every time we ran that soft zone where we were backing up every team just ran slants or short curl routes and gouged us all the way down the field. The only reason Wisconsin didn't do the exact same thing in our bowl game is we lucked up on an interception on a longer pass.

I get so tired of that "keep everything in front of you" mentality in the fourth quarters. That has to change. If anything, it would've made more sense to make Craft throw the long balls versus the shorter passes.

Like I said over in the Chavis thread.... "It's always going to be a recipe for disaster when your defensive coordinator makes the decision that he will concede 5-7 yards to the other team on EVERY PLAY. Chavis has forgotten 100x the amount of football I will ever know, but me and my friends could go out there and play 5 yard pitch and catch when the corners line up 10-15 yards off the ball.

Nothing will change with Chavis calling the shots. It's the same thing every single year.
