Why do coaches turn down TN???

In your OPINION, why have all these coaches turned down the TN football program in the last few hires...

Do they know something about the "powers that be" that we don't??? LWS has already said they don't care about winning..

Yes, I'm assuming that all the coaches have REALLY turned the job down. If I was running a business aka TN football, I'm not going to tell you I didn't look for the best coach, so you will by tickets, and concessions...

Opinions are never wrong.

Which coaches are you asking about?

Key word 'control'....https://www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0901/092.html

"What’s more, he was given total control of the football program: recruiting, coaching, business administration and public relations. There are coaches at other universities who have similar salaries, like Charlie Weis at Notre Dame and Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California. But no coach, including those in the professional leagues, can match Saban’s combination of money, control and influence. Saban, now entering his second year as the coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, is the most powerful coach in sports."

Hamilton was AD. Everyone but an out-of-work Kiffin said no thanks. When Kiffin bolted, he ignored Kevin Sumlin and hired Dooley. Would you want to work at a university that would elevate Hamilton to AD? Hamilton was UT's hurricane Marie. Financially and otherwise, men's athletics was devastated by his brief tenure.

Hart was who Tennessee could get to replace Hamilton (Joan Cronan didn't want the job. What does that tell you?). Given the situation he inherited, Hart could get CBJ (Jones actually wanted the job.).

Y'all have short memories or bad case of Bammeritis (reality doesn't apply).

Coaches turned us down in 2012 for 2 reasons...

1. The roster was garbage. Most coaches want to come into a situation where they have the talent to be successful immediately. We didn't have that in 2012, but we do now.

2. The UTAD and Top Boosters.. They want too much control. Big time coaches are successful because they have full control of the program. Do you think anyone in Alabama's AD or any of their boosters are telling Saban what he can and can't do? Not a chance. He tells THEM what to do! For TN to land a big name coach, the powers that be are going to have to loosen their grip... This could potentially still be a problem today, but I'm hearing good things about Currie. He seems like he knows what he wants, and he's getting all the right people on his side (Peyton, Fulmer, Majors, ect). I trust him as of right now.. but that could change if he drops the ball here.

have u read these forums? Our actual fanbase... the people that actually go to games and support the team has historically been one of the best. But over the last decade wit the advent of social media the vocal minority has found a platform and is growing.

Funny story about forums the whiners and nutjobs are normally the people that post most. This is true of all forums sports and otherwise. the problem is in today's age of meme's and 1 hour turnarounds on news stories that vocal minority has a really big voice.

As an individual I have very little power over Vol's football but if i can stir up enough crap and bring the nutjobs out of the woodworks in social media you can make a big stink. The people that do this mostly think they are doing the right thing but don't get the repercussions of what they are doing. They poison the well.

CBJ has consistently brought in great recruiting classes. During most of that time outside perception has been he was on the hotseat. Imagine how much better those classes would be had there not been such a perception. we currently have a top 10 ranked class. No matter what that ranking will drop some but trust me they fire butch recruits will shy away no matter who we hire. In the last 10 years this has not been a stable program and that's mostly because of rash choices made and too much unrealistic pressure.

I am a coach and I get offered the job t UT knowing that if i don't win the SEC in a year or 2 the fanbase is gonna turn on me I move on because its not a realistic expectation. There is a difference in pride and fanaticism. I love my team and know we are capable of reaching the top but I don't expect it to just happen. It takes time and a lot f things totally out of the coaches control factor in.

To the original question - if you want to know why

1. Read this site
2. Look at social media sites

This stuff has been going on every day since CBJ was hired. Why? Because many are still BUTT HURT that Gruden ( ... insert whomever the person thought would be better but either did not apply or said h*** no ...) was not the coach.

Folks attack not only the coach but his family and the players as well.

These type of coaches leave when the downfall start due to them not wanting to put in the time / effort it takes to recruit or maintain success. They build their reputation on taking advantage of a prior coaches hard work.

Instant gratification, easy money ...

Flavor of the month Coaches don't turn down Tennessee because the fans expect them to win, nor even because of the Fulmer, Kiffen, Dooley fiascoes. The real clinker was Mike Hamilton. That stench still han't worn off.

If a coach can't accept $4+million per year to tolerate a fan base that expects to compete for and win the SEC East, a terrible division, then he's a p+++y and needs to make a living doing something else.

I have no idea why people keep saying "the fanbase". It's a stupid answer. The same fan base that checkers the stadium? The same fan base that packs over 90K in Neyland when we're awful? We have the most loyal fan base in college football. Most coaches would kill to have a fan base like this.

Do you think Bamas fan base would be better? Florida? LSU? Oklahoma? Ohio State? No. Why? Because, like us, they have great traditions and expect to win.

People keep saying the fan base because it is true. I don't think it is the entire fan base - but a very vocal minority that has an agenda.

What is happening right now in social media is NOT normal. It has a mob mentality to it.

Rumors and outright LIES every day and sometimes more than once.

I think there are some who are more worried about being right than the success of this team. I think some are actually afraid that the team will rebound and end up being good enough to keep CBJ and thus feel the need to spread LIES to try to destroy the man's character. There was an all out attempt just last week.

FWIW, I think the fans have been remarkabky patient. True, CBJ didn't "win the SEC in a year or 2" as you put it. May I point out that he also didn't win it in 2 or 3 years. Nor did he in 3 or 4 years. And by now it should be painfully obvious that he will not win it in 4 or 5 years.

The UT fanbase is long suffering and does not make knee jerk calls for a coaches head. Five years is quite generous by current standards. He would warrant at least one or two more of we saw progress on the field, but it is quote apparent that we are actually REGRESSING this season.

5 years is generous to win the SEC? Starting with team Dooley left behind? That is the definition of unreasonable fans.

If you believe a coach and team should automatically win their conference within 2 years of having a team full of his players , then do you expect them to win it every year after that? Every 2 years? 3?

In a conference of 14 teams, you demand that your team win it every 2 to 3 years? Really, that is unreasonable. Even if you throw out the traditional bottom half of the league and you expect your team to win an SEC championship every 2-3 years completely discounts the fact that the other teams have D1 players also.

Not reading through the entire thread, but an answer to your question is ADs. No one respected Hamilton or Hart.

While that may be true, I PROMISE you Alabama was as bad or worse when they were down. We just didn't have social media like we do now to put it on display. It is no better at any big time school. It's not unique to Tennessee.

In the past they turned us down because we were at rock bottom. Nobody wanted the short notice hire after Kiffin bolted and no one other than Butch wanted to inherit Dooleys mess. The program is primed and in a good place for a big name coach to settle in now though.

Let Neyland show up 75% red during Bama week and watch how much they care then.

This is utter horse s#i+ and it's being cemented more every week.

This team is slidding backward and it has nothing to do with the fanbase. Elite coaches don't worry about things that don't affect what they do. That's why Jones isn't and never will be an elite coach. Jones recruiting is all that separates him from being Dooley.

UT needs a football coach now and not salesman.

money....we had a shot at debo but went cheap w/ boy wonder.

This was the whole purpose of the thread... We made the money rain on wanted coaches, but they just took out their umbrellas, and walked away from one of the greatest jobs in college football.

Why!!!
