Just curious. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I must of missed it. He went on to Indiana to be the Director of Operations after making 4 straight tournaments.

"This ends an emotional time for me because I have never before left where I felt that my work was incomplete. Even though I feel optimistic about the prospects for next season, I believe that in the best interests of myself and the university, it is time for a change."

Health related? Tired of being here? What happend?

Great coach who's heart never bleed orange. Very under appreciated here due to his short four year stint, but he was a heck of a coach. I think he realized he wasn't happy here, and he was man enough to step down instead of tanking us with half hearted recruiting and coaching, which Buzz ended up doing for him anyways.

I think it was mainly he wasn't very popular and not very likable.

Even with his success, I always felt like his teams usually underachieved, with the exception of his first team. I still am mad at him for that epic collapse against UNC in the Sweet 16, and the road was laid out beautifully for a Final Four trip.

And then that last year....they did their best to not make the NCAAT. In fact it took a miracle 3 pointer to get the SC game to OT where they won, and they really didn't show up against Charlotte in the NCAAT. He probably deserved a 5th year based on making the NCAAT 4 years in a row alone, but he was hard to root for.

if he's such a great coach, why hasn't he been a head coach any where else since UT?

Down here we refer to that as the Jim Donnan Effect . . . a coach whose results can't overcome a crappy personality and inability to play the game with administration and donors.

Umm 4 years 4 NCAA tournament appearances, and 1 sweet 16 appearance. Never had a season with less then 20 wins or more here. I'd say he did pretty well for himself. His biggest problem as GAVol pointed out is that his personality was terrible, and few liked him off the court. What he did as a coach on the court was very, very good here.

You don't run off coaches who get you to 4 consecutive NCAA tourneys just because you don't like him or her. If that were true, which it very well maybe in this case, then we deserve to have the Buzz and Conzo ball here. I've personally had lunch with Buzz before and let me tell you he can't be much better. His arrogance was sickening and he was a piss poor basketball coach. There's a lot of a**holes in this world, go into the medical field and deal with Drs and PhD people and you will really meet some winners, but at the end of the day the final product delivered is all that matters. It's no fun come march when UT is in the NIT or sitting at home, just like it's no fun to watch football bowl games when UT is 5-7 and sitting at home. UT needs to be about winning ball games, while doing it with as much class and integrity as possible. I'd take Green and his a** of a personality over Conzo and his boring basketball any day of the week, because come March at least I had my Vols to cheer for in the NCAA tourney.

So....what was the official (given) and the unofficial reasons for his leaving...other than it being a 'winter of discontent' I can't recall....

LOL Tony had no control over Tony. I can still see him on a fast break out running his on dribbling. A shot attempt at Florida where he walked it across half court and threw it up, the color commentator said "My God, he shot that one from Ocala.".

You called him a great coach; what he did here was good, but he also had a loaded roster thanks to O'Neil. His recruiting sucked, and if you watched his last season, he was losing control of that team game by game.

He had good results, but he was not a great coach by any means.

Never has a player frustrated me so much. He could be out of sight, and turn around and make the most boneheaded decisions.

I still have visions of him chucking up 3s while we had a nice lead against UNC in the Sweet 16. Also when he came running off the bench against UK to fight, when he was supposed to have an injured ankle.

I watched on you tube #4 Tennessee at #10 Syracuse. Man that was a loaded squad. Wish we still had Victor and Slay.

His teams mostly underachieved and finally collapsed with an awful losing streak in his last year. Yeah they won a lot but they were loaded with athletic talent and never seemed to maximize it. The nail in his coffin was when he insulted the fans with a comment that went something like the fans could go to Kmart if they didn't want to watch his team play. I don't remember the exact comment but it's been a long time.
