The #1 reason for Currie to hire Gruden isn't that he has a super high chance of turning things around in Knoxville. I personally think it's a very high risk hire. It's akin to hiring Peyton Manning as head coach. If it all goes south, then what???

Nope, the reason Currie should fall all over himself to get Gruden is because it completely takes him off the hook for the hire.

This is to date the biggest and most important hire of Curries career. It's make or break for him UNLESS he gets Gruden. Gruden is his way out of taking any blame if Gruden turns out not to do so well as a college coach. He's by far the fan favorite to become coach. So all Currie has to say if things don't work out is "hey, I got the guy YOU wanted me to get".

Outside of maybe Mullen or Fisher, Currie will be on the hook if the hire(whoever it is) doesn't work out.

I hadn't even considered that

Revenue...Gruden will create plenty of that and the school will benefit from it...Season tickets sales will be through the roof...Just try and get single tickets if he is hired..Gonna cost a bundle...Shirts and jerseys will sell like crazy along with everything else that has a power T on it..He is money in the bank and they know it...Oh yeah he should do well as our coach too...Bigtime recruits will go nuts over the chance to play for him...Knoxville will be happy again...If he wins and that is a big IF...He will adapt to the college game...A football coach is a football coach...Learning to recruit will be his biggest hurdle without getting us on probation.

If Currie hires Gruden because its what the fans want and Gruden fails then I want Currie gone too. He needs to hire who gives TN the best chance at winning. No AD in their right mind will hire a guy because that is who the fans want and then say I hired who you fans told me to hire.

Actually a good point in that if it Did go south, Currie could say "Hey I got the guy that everyone said was a Homerun and Impossible to get!!" :ermm:

1. Every AD in the country would hire Gruden.
2. Saying hiring Gruden as coach is akin to hiring Peyton as coach is like saying starting Peyton at quarterback is akin to starting Gruden at quarterback.

Gruden unites the fan base and brings instant credibility. It’s the only name that brings instant credibility. This hire gives Currie a second chance if Gruden doesn’t win. But it strengthens the program as a whole and will instantly bring most recruits back and deliver more just on his name. The Gruden threads are annoying, but his ceiling is higher than anyone’s. He’s just not as sure fire safe as Patterson or Mullen.

Currie would instantly because the most popular AD in CFB. I wouldn't be shocked to see Neyland filled to capacity for the spring game. Gruden would create an energy in Knoxville not seen in 20 years.

Boy, that’s some awfully cynical ish right there. Rather than what the OP proposes, perhaps Currie is just trying to hire the high profile guy that he thinks would be best to run the Vol football program....just also happens to be the guy 95% of all Vol fans are clamoring for.

So Currie should want to make the hire so he could hide behind it?

That's not really a solid plan. Says a lot about the individual doing the hiding.

Gruden would be a statement hire. I think if he truly wanted this job, he's smart enough to know what goes along with it. Job wouldn't be too big for him. Instantly have the respect of the current players and future ones. Fan base would be pretty excited some skeptical, excitement though there would be. We need a coach like that whether it's him or someone else. He's knows X's and O's.. Would hire a great staff , because he wouldn't be coming here to fail.

All the same i'd be fine with Gary Patterson. Mullen solid but kind of ho hum, may do well.. See there is that deal again, may do well, may not. Plenty of others that would be a upgrade also. I don't think we're going to get down in options this time. Someone good and respected is coming here and thank god for that. Been too damn long.

I'm all-in on Gruden. But, we the fans don't make the big bucks. He can not use fans as an excuse. That Imo would make him seem inept.
