Why can't we enjoy the victory?

Maybe it has something to do with being sold all off season about what a great passing offense we were about to see and it took resorting to smash mouth football to put Bowling Green away?

Ways to celebrate at 30-point victory:

The good ways:
-- Yeah! Go Vols!
-- Sure, they're a lesser opponent, but a win is still a win, and a 30-point margin is still a 30-point margin. Go Vols!
-- We have some work to do, but hey, we're starting off on the right side of the ledger. Go Vols!

The other ways (reserved for trolls, fans of other schools, and self-hating Vols):
-- That sucked!
-- We're doomed.
-- 3-9 at best.
-- JG part deux.
-- I knew we shoulda started Bailey/Hooker/__insert name here, even if no longer on the roster__
...

I could actually go on endlessly with that second list, as many of you have proven by spewing venom these past 36 hours. Over a double-digit win.

This forum is pretty much gone to the trolls and haters at this point. We need a new start.

I know as a VOLS fan, I want us to beat every team by 50 pts, but realistically those teams come to play as well. Until teams decide to forfeit games, they are coming to the field with a win in sight. Now, many will not be good enough to win but they will play to win.

So many on VN are talking about how horrible we played. Yes, mistakes were made and there is room for improvement. But we came away with an impressive win. Do some fans not recognize that BG did not score a touchdown? There were no mentions of an "upset alert" since we took care of business.

I've always said that the first game could go either way. Even Ohio State had trouble with Minnesota. Even if every game ended with us getting 2 points, but we win, I would take it and call it a winning season as it should be.

Am I concerned? Yes, because I know greater teams loom large and are ready to make their own statements against us. There is room for optimism. CH did not expect to not see room for improvement.

After watching the game, I think Milton has to show out in the next 2 games. CH will not tolerate a remake performance of last night. If Milton doesn't get it done against Pitt and TN Tech, someone else is going to get the nod.

I'm hoping Milton takes all of this seriously.

Hats off to the DL and OL! When was the last time our QB had that much time in the pocket? The last few years, JG was running for his life and we faced so many 3rd and longs.

I hope our guys build on this momentum...
Most fans are happy we won and even more of us want to win more games in the future. We will not in very many games in the SEC if we can not have an effective passing game. The game Thursday illustrated that w do not yet have an efficient passing game. Will it improve? Yes it will, but which QB will be able to improvement it the most. I know that most think Milton is a dangerous runner and that that skill will make his passing game more effective. I did not see that part od=f his game last Thursday. Maybe he was holding back with his running and passing games, but I did not see any of that after the first quarter. I think every other position of the team saw more than one player play at all position except QB. The game last Thursday would have been the perfect time to see what the other QBs could do in real time.
I know that some were afraid that Milton will lose his confidence if we tested another QB when the game was on the line. If his mental psyche is so tender that he would lose confidence, he will never be able to be the QB that can win difficult games. On the other hand, if his psyche Is sure that he responds to the challenge, he will improve and lead us to the wins we are seeking. Winners want to win and will do what ever they have to do it. Lets hope we see that attitude next Saturday.

Screwed up expectations that screwed up this generation of Tennessee football.. it was the expectations of Fulmer to keep winning 10 games a year then fire him, btw not a Big Fulmer fan esp after this AD debacle but this leadership at Tennessee has been a joke after the Fulmer firing and it continued. The negativity I saw last night and continues is not good for the program, wish there was more positive and upbeat fans it just brings everyone and everything up… life is more enjoyable if there’s positivity..

I don't think you get it. We have no "rightful place." We only have what we earn. And we haven't earned the right over the past 20 years to be named along the SEC's elite.
I get what you are saying, but if you don’t start off believing that you belong there, you are never going to make it.

Today is an example of why I hate Thursday games. It is a Saturday in September and I have no pregame, no anticipation of kickoff. All I can do is watch other teams have fun while we sit around bored 😢

Enjoying the victory is not possible after 12 or 13 years of failure and misery. It's going to take a while.

My expectations were way too high, just gotta let the game flow. Good or bad. We aren’t always going to play top game, I guess a lot of people, including myself have a hard time understanding that.

Why are we not happy? Because we looked sloppy with execition against a team that likely would lose to a few of the nations top High School teams.

I was expecting perfection from all 3 phases of the game. That was not achieved. We did win, even with all the mistakes that were made.

It is almost like biting into a really nice apple and finding half a worm. It won’t kill you but it not want you expected. Most would throw the rest of the apple away. It takes little bit of time to eat another apple without doing a lot if inspecting and evaluating.

If you thought we were winning 9 games this year you weren't using much realism.

Bowling Green - W
Pittsburgh -W
Tennessee Tech - W
Florida -L
Missouri -W
South Carolina -W
Ole Miss - W
Alabama - L
Kentucky - W
Georgia - L
South Alabama - W
Vanderbilt - W

Why was that such an unrealistic goal?

I had a great time watching the game.

I was hoping for more points….I thought Tennessee would score more…..but they didn’t.

I also thought Tennessee would give up more……but they didn’t .

It did look like Tennessee was playing with an experimental robot QB……but hey I’m hoping it will get better…….or hoping there will be change. No change was “needed” in that game.

The D looked better than I thought it would.

The running game looked much better than I thought it would.

The passing game (receivers included) looked much worse than I thought it would.

Overall……I had a great time, enjoyed the game……and for me……I wasn’t really disappointed.

I wanted 50, I got 38. I figured they’d give up 13, they gave up less than half.

We’ll know where we are next week. Pitt isn’t a great team but their decent……..not bad, but not good.
You should not get excited about the D based on the team and Qb they played Thursday. This game is almost meaningless in evaluating the teams D since tBG is glorified high school team. We will know 99% of how well the season may progress after the Pitt game.

That’s not unrealistic.

I expect the team to improve each week. Is that unrealistic?

I expect JH and staff to make in game adjustments and adjustments on a week to week basis. Is that unrealistic?

I expect the players to put in the work to improve their own performance on the field. Is that unrealistic?

I expect JH and staff to work with the players to come up with a game plan that would put us in position to win at least one if not all of the other 3 games. Is that unrealistic?

Please te me you weren't impressed with that game ?

32 point victory & we are the laughing stock on every SEC social media page this am. Everyone saw how bad we were.
The moral to that story is don’t look at other team sites. Why do I care what a gump or a jort wearing FL fan thinks? If you see me on another team’s site, you better take a picture cause it’ll be a first. I wouldn’t waste my time. Heck, it’s all I can do to stomach some of the goofy, un knowledgeable fans on this site. Too many people who don’t know football from cricket.

Unrealistic expectations. We want so desperately to be elite again that we see what we want and not what is there.

BG was winding the clock down to under 5 every snap there goal wasn’t to win it was not to let us get 50 which they accomplished… I think everybody is panicking for no reason… the goal is not to be playing your best football week 1 it’s to get better throughout the season and I think we will… over 300 yards rushing usually equals lower passing numbers couple that with a few drops and some times wrs couldn’t keep there feet in and walla you have an underwhelming passing night but it’s not nearly as bad as some of y’all are making it to be…

It may be realistic but that doesn't mean it is probable. Pitt, Mizzou, USCjr., Ole Miss, and UK can all beat us if we don't play our best game. That means each of those games are basically a coin flip. 9-3 could quickly become 6-6 or worse. Factor in injuries, learning curve of the team under a new coach and I think we should be pleased if we make a bowl.

Because some of us have better expectations for UT than beating a team that's bit going to be competitive in their own garbage league.

Was it unrealistic to expect competent QB play from a Junior transfer, against a terrible football team?
