Why can UT not hire a football coach efficiently?

Absolutely. Could've also been Fulmer, a BOT member, big donor, or interim Chancellor. Even was reported that Sankey let the SEC schools know other info not previously released.
Sankey , I am guessing. Vol fans saying “we f** this up” as usual with Freeze,
But Nick wanted to hire him last year, an with the OC job open he passed on him this year???
Auburn passed on the guy that beat Bama???
Freeze passed on all 3 , to be HC at Liberty???
Who wants to be HC at Liberty???
Sankey

Are the "sheep" those that aren't freaking out like the world is ending because they don't know exactly what is going on so they assume the worst and get butthurt when others don't agree with them?
After 10 years of disaster after disaster should you not assume the worst until proven wrong? And if your answer is no isn’t that basically the very definition of blind optimism? Not trying to pick a fight just genuinely curious about different trains of thought.

I disagree. I honestly believed he's offered several high-end OC's but Pruitt's been turned down by each.

Just my opinion, but I dont think any of the ones mentioned have had an offer made to them. I don't understand If he has his man why the continuous interviewing though

The OC struggle is a direct result of getting your 8th choice at HC after having to fire your AD, which then led to the firing of your chancellor. Trickle down suckenomics.
You don’t know too much about College Football do you?
You talk about Pruitt like he is Bozo Butch,
I guarantee in the profession he is highly regarded by other coaches and not thought of as 8th choice HC.
The only worst suckenomics than the suits in charge in Knoxville is the ignorance of some of the fans.
The suits do appear to be clueless at times but compared to some of our fans they look like Einstein

Did I say it was a well oiled machine?

Boyd had to come out and deny it because of idiot UT fans. DM has been wrong in most of this search

You're simply inventing Boogeymen because that's what you want. The most likely scenario is that the HC gets to make the call and his AD will give him an opinion also. It's really that simple
So you think that they are just this incompetent, huh?

(1) your perception that everyone else had smooth hires is not necessarily true. Southern Cal went thru about 5 NO's before Kiffin left here. Kiffin was very far down on their wish list. USC was facing NCAA infractions and no coach wanted to walk in to that mess.
Also, Mike Shula was fired at Bama and the best they could find was Mike Price.
Mike Price was fired and then Rich Rodriquez said NO so Bama waited about 10 days after begging Saban to leave the Dolphins.
We aren't the only team that goes thru this

But that was just 10 days, we are close to day 20

Every other team in the country seems to be able to handle this process quickly and efficiently, but every coaching hire here turns into a drawn out circus. I know reports are out that Pruitt has his guy, but all of this reeks of interference from somewhere....Fulmer, Boyd, Haslam, BOT, somebody. Pruitt likely knew of Helton's departure for months and it sounded like he had a short list very quickly. I know that everybody is coming out and saying this is Pruitt's decision, but I'm not buying it. Someone has to be interfering and I'm raising the question of who? My personal opinion is Fulmer but that is just tea leaf reading.

The only circus I've seen at all on this one has been on Volnation.

We know Freeze not being hired came from our end.

Do we? Please link me to the proof.

We know 3 of the top targets in the market are off the table now. We know those top targets were hired by schools that started searching for an OC around the same time or after we did. We know the early signing period is bearing down and we still don't have an OC.

Maybe they weren't Pruitt's top 3. Maybe Pruitt didn't think they'd mesh well. Just furthers my point... we don't know.

If Pruitt intended this to go on this long it calls his judgment into question for not recognizing that there was a sense of urgency required. It's possible he's being turned down repeatedly. It could also be he is pulling some cloak and dagger nonsense to disguise an unpopular hire. None are good looks.

Why is his judgement in question? Who does this look bad to, aside from half of volnation? Please don't say recruits... we just got a commit from Harrison Bailey.

Hopefully he surprises us all and pulls a fantastic hire no one expected. But based on the last decade most aren't going to believe that until it happens, and well they shouldn't. Unless he pulls someone like Chaney or Jim Bob, things are going to get uglier after the hire.

He wasn't here the last decade.

Look, Pruitt may screw the pooch here, but we don't know and I'm just trying to get everyone to chill out until then.

WHO are you OR we collectively to say the process isn't efficient. With Recruiting amped up and many coaches involved in Bowl Games, it may be super efficient. The reality is you and I don't know. We just post stupid "crap" giving our lame opinions.

We are the reason football exists. We buy the tickets, the concessions, the gear, etc. We are the reasons advertisers pay millions. We are the reason Adidas and Nike fight for the right to pay millions for a contract with the school. We are the ones that have been getting very little return on our investment for the last decade and we should be the ones demanding answers if we want that to change.

At this point it's going to be Friend or google state or one of his buddies. It's almost too late for it the OC to be out recruiting already. To me it feels like they are delaying the announcement until after signing day so the twitter riot won't effect it. They must feel the negative backlash from the hire is going to be worse than any possible recruiting bump announcing it before NSD. If this were a competently ran ship, this hire is done 3-5 days after Helton is gone. This is two recruiting cycles in a row where the focus of either the head coach or now the top assistant isn't on working for UT.

We've already been told someone shot the deal down with Freeze. Freeze on Finebaum when asked what happened Freeze basically said you would have to ask them. And went on to say I understand if my past scares schools and I have to live with that.

No conspiracy. Not saying it was the right or wrong move but sounds like someone did shoot down atleast Freeze coming here.

1. Can't build a program with someone you know for a fact is with you no more than two years when he walks in the door.
2. The only offer Freeze got with all the openings was Liberty. He wanted HC job way more than he wanted SEC coordinator. You think he would of took Liberty if Bama even came calling. No one in SEC is touching him yet. He doesn't want second.
3. See 1&2.
4. If you get this far, and this is A LOT of subjecture… If you are seriously looking at Propst since you are connected, and IF you ultimately decided no because of 12+ year old skeletons in his closet, how do you offer Freeze this soon.

Because we hired a guy who thinks he’s Nick Saban, but in reality just got smoked in six games by over 25 points. He seems to think he can dictate to high level OCs that they have to use his buddy as their OL coach. You know, the guy that presided over the worst OL in UT history. This is a rookie coach with an unrealistic understanding of where he is on the higharchy of coaches and total misunderstanding about where this football program stands.

I would hate to know I was a one trick pony>

Seems logical that we wouldn’t hire Freeze, but perhaps we wanted a consensus from not only the coach, but administration as well. If everyone isn’t on board, probably best to move on as an organization. You don’t want an OC coming in to an already tough job and dealing with politics as well. It’s possible Pruitt hasn’t found that person that fits his style and someone the administration feels good about. I’m fine waiting if it means we meet those criteria in the end, as at least the OC will be set up to succeed with support from all. Doesn’t matter to me if we have to google him too. Being last isn’t always bad, perhaps it gives Pruitt and the OC a chip on the shoulder and they use it to prove people wrong.

Using perhaps twice in a post should get extra likes!

Go Vols!

Yep. Gundy googled FCS successful offenses and found his OC that way. Some one was finally smart enough to go after the NDSU coach. I don't care if it is FCS. You have the record he has and 3 Natty's and you are recruiting kids to come to North Dakota. Please. Too many narrow minds on this board that think you have to be a high profile name in a P5 conference to be somebody.

Any chance we can just let the process play out without all the speculations. Some speculate then slam Pruitt based on this speculation. It's ridiculous. Heck, one poster makes the comment 'Because we hired a guy who thinks he’s Nick Saban, but in reality just got smoked in six games by over 25 points.' Really?

Step off the ledge and wait. Once the OC is hired, we'll all then be able to make some judgemetns. But even then, I'm sure some will scream 'farh Pruitt'.

We know he spoke to Freeze. We know Freeze is head coach at Liberty.
We know he spoke to Locksley. We know Locksley is head coach at Maryland
We know he wanted OSU OC but he is staying in Stillwater with a raise
We know he wanted Enos but Enos was promoted to OC at Bama
Those are not speculations.
We also are 90% sure we will end up with Friend or a Google search OC from North Eastern Nevada Central State.

Is that the same school Mike Gundy googled his OC from?????

So having read through this thread we have basically two camps:
1. Those who say we can't know with certainty that this is a dumpster fire hire...at least not just yet
2. Those who say based on prior experience with the way Tennessee handles coaching searches and what has been already reported this is already a dumpster fire hire.

What we do know is that all the OC's that most of VN would have considered home run hires are off the market. So at best after a month of waiting we will get a mee..eh hire; and more than likely it will be a google hire (Please tell me who else is out there that you would consider home run who is available and even remotely likely to take the Vol OC position) . So it really comes down to semantics...one man's/lady's mee..eh hire is another man's/lady's dumpster fire hire.

I'm in the mee..eh camp...I'm just spent emotionally on the football program. I will continue to follow them but I have no expectation of receiving any excitement or joy from the experience. So yeah mee..eh pretty much sums it up.

1. College football existed long before it became its own entity. My dad played in '53 and '54. He was required to read, write, and make grades. He also wound up with 3 degrees and was the worlds foremost scientist on anything and everything peanuts. They had fans even then.

2. You think too highly of your position in the UT athletic hierarchy. Or college sports in general.

Probably because the football team is coached by the AD! The same person that started the fire got some more gasoline!!

Sunshine pumpers still towing that line apparently.

We can't make a hire because this program is a 3 ring circus at heart.

It's complete and utter absurdity.

I like how the m was dropped to the second line of your name, makes more sense that way.
