Why can UT not hire a football coach efficiently?

I can’t legitimately answer that question. The problem has definitely been evident for the past decade. It’s frustrating when other teams have no problem filling vacancies with well qualified coaches and we are always scrapping for seconds. It seems that our school is just not as invested in building a top level football program, and it saddens me, seeing as schools like Georgia, Florida, Bama, auburn and LSU are in our conference and have no problems doing what they want

Seems logical that we wouldn’t hire Freeze, but perhaps we wanted a consensus from not only the coach, but administration as well. If everyone isn’t on board, probably best to move on as an organization. You don’t want an OC coming in to an already tough job and dealing with politics as well. It’s possible Pruitt hasn’t found that person that fits his style and someone the administration feels good about. I’m fine waiting if it means we meet those criteria in the end, as at least the OC will be set up to succeed with support from all. Doesn’t matter to me if we have to google him too. Being last isn’t always bad, perhaps it gives Pruitt and the OC a chip on the shoulder and they use it to prove people wrong.

Using perhaps twice in a post should get extra likes!

Go Vols!

UTAD loves conspiracies and smoke screens because they like to watch us squirm for weeks at a time just so they can wear us down so we'll be happy with whoever they hire. Even though the last time they did that, an Athletic director and school Chancellor got fired.

Probably because the football team is coached by the AD! The same person that started the fire got some more gasoline!!

We've already been told someone shot the deal down with Freeze. Freeze on Finebaum when asked what happened Freeze basically said you would have to ask them. And went on to say I understand if my past scares schools and I have to live with that.

No conspiracy. Not saying it was the right or wrong move but sounds like someone did shoot down atleast Freeze coming here.
the fact that he's not working at P5 school tells me that EVERYBODY shot him down.

Every other team in the country seems to be able to handle this process quickly and efficiently, but every coaching hire here turns into a drawn out circus. I know reports are out that Pruitt has his guy, but all of this reeks of interference from somewhere....Fulmer, Boyd, Haslam, BOT, somebody. Pruitt likely knew of Helton's departure for months and it sounded like he had a short list very quickly. I know that everybody is coming out and saying this is Pruitt's decision, but I'm not buying it. Someone has to be interfering and I'm raising the question of who? My personal opinion is Fulmer but that is just tea leaf reading.

It's only a circus on here, keep feeding the fire!

(1) your perception that everyone else had smooth hires is not necessarily true. Southern Cal went thru about 5 NO's before Kiffin left here. Kiffin was very far down on their wish list. USC was facing NCAA infractions and no coach wanted to walk in to that mess.
Also, Mike Shula was fired at Bama and the best they could find was Mike Price.
Mike Price was fired and then Rich Rodriquez said NO so Bama waited about 10 days after begging Saban to leave the Dolphins.
We aren't the only team that goes thru this

Except everyone has said it's Pruitt's call. Any intervention by the others you listed is made up (and some have come out publicly to deny it)
Money talks and BS walks though right? Nobody is going to come out and say Big money donor __________ shot the deal down. So either way we probably will never know.

This tells me that a person cannot believe anything this athletic department says.

Do you really think Randy Boyd or Fulmer is going to come out and say yes, I interfered with a coaching hire? Matthew's has already reported that Fulmer has requirements on the hire.
Boyd had to come out and deny it because of idiot UT fans. DM has been wrong in most of this search

You're simply inventing Boogeymen because that's what you want. The most likely scenario is that the HC gets to make the call and his AD will give him an opinion also. It's really that simple

This is why no big time coach would take the Tennessee job. we settled for Dooley and Butch. Because the people in charge in the UT office is not going to let the head coach hire who he wants. Thats why we will stay at the bottom tier of the SEC. They need to wake up, Your not going to beat Saban and Smart doing what this bunch is doing. You had a chance to hire Freeze and or Briles. Both are gone now. So you have to settle for whhat nobody else wants. Looks like Enos id going to get the Alabama gig. We will have to settle for Haslen boy, Kitchens. Unreal

We can’t really know either way. What we do know is:

1. Past administrations were fairly incompetent with their hires.

2. Fulmer is a great football mind and a first time AD.

3. Pruitt is a great football mind and a first time HC.

4. Sources have been very inaccurate during this administration.

The past actions by UT leaves us expecting disappointed but Fulmer and Pruitt leave room for hope. Who knows.

Let’s just hope we get someone who can compete against the least of the East.

I wouldn't want 1000 fans on campus protesting a year later either as an interim Chancellor. As for Doug Matthews, I trust him as far as I could throw him.

Nobody ever thinks about that. It took Alabama 3 bad hires and Rich Rodriguez saying no to get to Saban. It took UGA 2 bad hires and Glen Mason changing his mind to get to Mark Richt. Florida has hired Ron Zook, Will Muschamp and Jim McElwain in the last 15 years or so. It's just not as clean as people pretend it is at other places.

I hear you, but what I said is factually accurate. Everyone is going off pure speculation, which is fine, but it should be acknowledged that it's purely opinion. We don't know anything yet.

We know he spoke to Freeze. We know Freeze is head coach at Liberty.
We know he spoke to Locksley. We know Locksley is head coach at Maryland
We know he wanted OSU OC but he is staying in Stillwater with a raise
We know he wanted Enos but Enos was promoted to OC at Bama
Those are not speculations.
We also are 90% sure we will end up with Friend or a Google search OC from North Eastern Nevada Central State.
