Why Bryce Brown MUST start

Kiffin is doomed. He didn't sign 7 OL and the number 1 recruit runs too high.

Never said he was doomed.... ever. I said that they lose 4 SRs after this year and have not recruited adequate replacements for the past several years... not just this one... and those statements are STILL undeniable facts. The OL will be thin and too dependent on youth in 09.

I also openly questioned whether some who have all these hopeful thoughts right now would really have the patience to wait until '11 or '12 to start competing for titles. That remains to be seen.

In every video I've seen of Bryce Brown he runs too high. Maybe they'll correct it before fall practice even starts. Maybe he'll join the small minority of RB's who were just powerful enough to be good anyway. Maybe he'll be a bust because he can't overcome it... NO MATTER HOW YOU SLICE IT, the notion that "BB must start" is NOT TRUE.

These are cases where people are setting themselves up unnecessarily for disappointment... and starting a pattern at the end of which they'll turn on Kiffin.

I was just jerking your chain. Calm down.

I don't think Brown must start. He should barring injury see the field quite a bit.

I don't think he will walk out on the practice field and be the best . I think he could play into it , given his potential . It is very rare that a freshman comes in and is not a work in progress . Watching his highlights doesn 't tell enough . Watch enough film of enough quality players and they are all scorching the competition , going coast to coast 50 times . He had a dominant O line . He won't have that with us ...they may be good but it is rare for an Oline to dominate in the SEC . I hope he does really well very fast but it is hard for me to believe he is gonna be the guy without a fair amount of acclimation to this level against SEC d's.

This is true as a general matter. The position of tailback, though, has a quicker learning curve than any other position on the field. And so it is easier for a freshman to make an immediate (and hopefully profound) impact.

So the number one recruit in the nation has no chance of starting at a 5-7 school? Hmmm!!

The starters will be determined by how they perform on the practice field. If Poole is playing much better, he will start over Brown.

Obviously

I know. I was just answering the serious part of your response. I am calm... and harbor no ill toward you at all.

I think it is possible and definitely something CLK would like to do if BB can earn it.

I'm still thinking Schofield has the best chance to start amongst the Fr. It is a position of need and while the reports have been positive... I still see Pope as a pretty desperate choice for RT. Fans focus on JC for obvious reasons but Pope would be an even bigger turnaround than Crompton if he were to start.

I don't think I ever said he had "no chance". Do I think he will? No. I think he'll probably get carries but will play behind Hardesty and perhaps one other barring injury.

On the flip side of what I've been arguing, if BB is roughly equal to one of the other RB's then he gets the nod for recruiting purposes.

I can't help I'm a smartass by nature. :p

I don't think there is anyway Brown doesn't see the field this coming season. Will he start? I don't know. The inevitable Hardesty injury will answer that question. I think Toney Williams will wind up being a huge star here.

I personally don't like Pope. If he proves himself to be a solid tackle, good for him.

I dont think it healthy to make new top recruits think they will automatically come in and start. They should have to earn their playing time like anyone else. It makes them accountable. For a new recruit, it should be a privelege for them to have the opportunity to start IF they prove it on the practice field. I think thats about all they can hope for in any situation as opposed to waiting until your chance after youve been there a while, which seemed to be how fulmer usually ran things.

I think Hardesty will be the main back, with a healthy dose of Creer and Poole. Brown, Williams, and Oku will see some playing time and it seems like the coaching staff will need to get creative and use these guys in several ways.

You may have to remove the healthy dose of Creer. From the sound of it, he will not be on the team this fall.

Brown will find time on the field this year for sure. He maybe a slot receiver on some plays or he may field punts/kickoffs.

It is very difficult for a freshman RB to come into the SEC and start immediately. They are showcased on every play. If I remember correctly even Hershel Walker did not start the first game of the season for UGA his freshman year and we all know how that turned out. In my opinion it would be very difficult for a freshman to come in and beat out a healthy Hardesty before the first game with all of the other adjustments a freshman must make getting aclimated to college life. After having said that I would be delighted if it happened.

no way brown starts the first game, i just dont see how kiffin could do that to the guys we've got now who he has done nothing but praise all spring. id love to see him on the field anywhere during the first game, i just dont think he will be in the backfield

Putting aside the irrelevant question of whether they were on the field on the first snap of the first game, Darren Mcfadden, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, and Jamal Lewis were all heavily featured their Freshman years. I'm sure I'm missing a couple notables.

RB is the easiest position for a true freshman to make an immediate impact. If you look outside the SEC to expand the sample size, there have been a boatload of RB's who made a strong (positive) impact their Freshman year.

I hope to see BB lined up at tailback, slot, WR even run some end arounds and and reverses....imagine the fits that a DC would have to prepare for ...even if he was used as a decoy some...line him up at WR and draw double coverage...Obviously I believe BB is more than a decoy but that would make defenses honest

I agree that BB is more than a decoy.

that is a great thought...I know I am stating the obvious here, but teams are not worried about our pass nearly as much as used to be so put Brown at some WR and let him get people worried about that big threat...I love it!
