Why Bruce Lied

I think what's missing is perspective. Honestly, how many coaches in Div 1 haven't committed a minor recruiting violation by excessive contact with a recruited player? I think if the NCAA wanted to theycould find 75% of the coaches in Div. 1 guilty of this.

My six-year-old kid understands that it's not the crime, it's the coverup. It's a cliche for a reason. It's amazing how many grownup Vol fans can't get that.

If, when shown that picture of his own house, Pearl had looked at it for a couple of seconds, then laughed and said, "Okay guys, you got me," he would have been punished as a repeat offender but nowhere near like this.

Nobody is defending Pearl lying/coverup duh. The point is does the punishment fit the crime. He lied about a minor violation he committed. So fire him? If that's the rule it seems like there should be a lot less coaches in Div 1.

I bet you half the coaches in Div 1 have commited a minor rules violation this year. And bet if the NCAA called and asked them if they had committed a minor rules violation they wouldn't admit it.

he lied and got caught. This is a tough business, that's why Pearl made over $2 mil. It's a long, hard fall from that perch.

Why did the guy who drove his car too fast, on his way to commit a crime, get punished with jail? He was only speeding.

But how many of them would be stupid enough to lie about it if the NCAA showed them a photo of the violation being committed at their own house?

I posted this in another thread, but the NCAA is understaffed, has no subpeona power, and is hopelessly inadequate for policing the hundreds of schools they're supposed to oversee. There's a heavy incentive for coaches to lie and a minimal risk of getting caught. That's why the penalty has to be so heavy if they catch somebody; that's the only way there's a deterrent. If you lie to the NCAA, there's a fairly small chance you get caught, but if they do catch you, they will bend you over and ruin you. Everybody knows that. Pearl knew that. He went ahead and lied about the picture of his own house anyway.

Ok, that was stupid on his part if he did that. There's no defense for that.

That's what's so monumentally stupid about it. The investigators ALREADY HAD THE FREAKING PICTURE. There was no way he was going to get away with the lie; he knows damn well what the NCAA does to people who get caught lying to them. And yet he plowed right ahead and tried to cover it up anyway. It's mind-boggling.

An assistant coaches wife was also in the picture. He denied knowing her.\
.

How in the hell did the ncaa investigator know what the assistant coach's wife looks like?

Anyways, Pearl should have just told the truth.

Have you read the LOA and/or notice of termination of employment agreement?

I'd imagine roughly 91% of the fan base has not enlightened themselves to how absolutely stupid Pearl acted during this whole fiasco by reading the LOA.

My GF was all about keeping pearl, I made her read the LOA, and her first words, "oh, you have to fire this dumbass."

I think I'll keep her around.

This was so crazy firing the best coach Tennessee men had ever had ,this will hurt the program worst then taking the charges from the ncaa .You don't see nascar firing the grew chief when they get caught cheating they just pay the fines and move on because if you are a winner in any sport there is a very fine line in playing by the rules and cheating it always been that way and always will be he just got caught .pay the fine and move on it would have been cheaper in the long run this firing will cost millions in lost because it will take a long time to rebuild a program from the ground up.Does people really think KY coach get the number one draft picks every year being honest.winning is were the money is at you do what you have to do if you have to do to stay on top just look at Jimmy Johnsons race team they have been caught cheating and no one has been fired annd now they are in the history books as winners Tennessee needs a AD instead of a new coach .

Just go over to Rocky Top Talk and read the ridiculous denial and emotional vetting and that's normally a very rational site.

I got flamed for simply pointing out some facts in the case and how Bruce was ultimately responsible for this not Cheeks or Hamilton.

Basillio has also been a bit over the top but what is new about that. He is correct in agreeing with the separation as the only viable option at this point.

One more point regarding lying to NCAA...these are supposed to education institutions and coaches are important instructors and role models for the athletes. If a coach can't be honest and maintain some moral standard then I agree, throw the damn book at them. They have failed one of their primary responsibilities.

Would Jimmy (-ie?) Johnson fire his grew chief for cheating if the penalty for keeping him was being banned from racing for two years?
