This is strictly Jimmy Cheeks decision. Bruce was only going to be rehired over Jimmy Cheeks dead body. The same Jimmy Cheek who has said no academic admission exceptions, while all 13 other SEC teams do. The same man who made the admission standards higher than required by NCAA or SEC standards, that all the other schools do. Ask yourself how a Tennessee commit finds out on signing day that he does not qualify for admission to Tenn so the NEXT DAY he accepts a scholarship offer from Oklahoma where he qualifies according to NCAA standards.... Forget Hart... FIRE JIMMY CHEEK!!!!!

Unless I missed something, Orlando Brown has not qualified through the NCAA to play at Oklahoma. The coaches knew he would have trouble, and that is why we didn't take him. I agree with most of what you said, but that is not a great example if what you are arguing.

Anyone in charge of UT athletics that would even entertain the idea of rehiring Bruce Pearl should be fired.

He is a disaster to the athletic program. We are going to be competitive or not. Cheeks could care less. Cheeks and Hamilton mishandled the Pearl situation whereas our competitors would have provided direction and guidance to their coaches to get them through the violation. Look at how Cheeks and Susan Martin bumbled the Trae Golden situation.

Miami, Auburn, Missouri and on and on stand up to the NCAA over much worse violations. I am not condoning lying and cheating, but if we expect to keep up with the competition our Administration needs to fight for the programs. They don't. It's plain and simple. If every coach got a show cause for lying---there would be no coaches.

Until there is a groundswell of the masses straight to Haslams office to remove him its always going to be a huge thorn in the ADs side. The man has GOT TO BE REMOVED! Write the governor.

I agree with most of what you said. I don't get all the hate for Dave Hart.

He made a great hire in football I don't care if Butch is 1st choice or 25th on the list the guy just brought in a top 5 signing class after winning only 5 games with what amounts to a JV team in the SEC.

He made a great hire in baseball. I also saw where someone on this board said he fired Pat Summit are you kidding me? Does anyone think CPS should still be the head coach at Tennessee or anywhere for that matter in her condition? Its probably the person who thinks Holly should be fired even though she just won the SEC Tournament and secured a #1 seed!

He managed to shut down Cheek from siphoning off money from the AD into the academic department and people were wondering why the AD wasn't making the money that they should have the last several years.

Well.... The baseball hire was great, and the Pat Summitt thing was handled fine. I can't comment on that last part because I know nothing about it.

But...

He butchered the football hire. Now, I'm as big a Butch Jones fan as any, and as I've said plenty of times on the football forum, he was my FIRST choice. So I'm glad we have him. But the hiring process. Were you really okay with that? It was awful!! He made our school look like a laughingstock! #TurnedDownTennessee was even trending on Twitter for a few hours... Our football program, for that 2-3 day stretch, was the butt of every joke there was. I don't like Cheek either, but if that's not on Hart then nothing is.

I'm not really anti-Hart, but he didn't hire Dave Serrano. His only major hire here is Butch. There was no way Holly wasn't getting the Lady Vols job.

We'll know in 2-3 years how Butch is going to work out.

My biggest concern with Hart is that he was apparently willing to stand pat with Dooley until the Vandy loss eliminated us from bowl contention.

Whoooaaa, well golly. The nerve of a President of a university wanting to maintain a certain level of academic standards to make the university better. The nerve of that crazy man Cheek, recognizing that academics is the horse that pulls the cart, not the other way around (athletics). He has/had a vision for UT and was doing what he thought fit into that vision. Although people on this board may fail to realize, athletics is not the only thing on a collegiate campus. The real $$ comes from other places. There's a reason why Stanford, Texas A&M, and Michigan are top 10 in overall endowment (and it ain't because of sports).

Here's how I see that, the 30-40 athletes in all sports that this would likely effect isn't too likely to bring the collective GPA of the other 28,000 down around their heads. Nor would recruiting 30-40 people who were otherwise going to Harvard have any effect in raising academic standards.

Now what benefits the University of Tennessee more academically? Letting 3-4 people on the football team that can play at every other school in the SEC, or the millions of dollars that the AD funnels into academics that also doesn't happen at most other schools?

There is a balance - and this President doesn't understand that. He has systematically eliminated a large percentage of the potential student body - and I think the school was chartered with the idea of providing education for the students in the state. I have looked at many of the 3.95 GPA nerds running around on campus and I am not impressed. I have news for Cheek - there are a lot of tremendously successful UT grads and donors that wouldn't be admitted today based on his standards. Who doesn't know someone brilliant that snuck through UT by the skin of their teeth? How funny you should mention Stanford, Michigan, Texas A & M and we might as well throw in Texas-because each is know as much or more for having great athletic teams as they are for their endowment. Last I checked a couple of those schools have been adding enrollment and have over 40,000 students. Hasn't UT's enrollment dropped with Bugger at the helm. That is how I think he should be judged - how many of our kids are actually being educated at "our" University.

That's also why the cheerleaders and dance teams appearance have gone South :)

In my humble opinion - Cheek has it ass backward.

While this statement may appear argumentative, it is not meant as such. Since you seem to know so much about Cheek, his vision, and how he has improved UT academics, can you please provide links to show where our academic ratings have been rising? Where do our individual colleges rank compared to other schools, most notably, other SEC schools? If this is what Cheek is striving for, I assume there is data to show if he has been succeeding at his job. Can you please provide said data or links to so we might better understand just how well he is doing at his job?
