Why are we hated?

They don't, but when you pay attention to the point that anytime anything you perceive as negative hits you are hyper-aware of it. It's like when watching a Tennessee game and you see a missed holding call and you're furious. But you probably don't notice or look for times when Tennessee gets away with hold. You only remember the one that affected Tennessee.

All that isn't to say that officiating can't be one sided or unfair, I just don't think there is some grand plan against Tennessee. I don't think the sports media is against Tennessee because that makes no sense. Tennessee fans watch sports, all UT sports. They bring bigger ratings.

They loved us in 1975, 1982, 1988, 2011-2019...now they hate us. Wonder why? Well, here's a Tennessee fan who says: "Bring the hate, y'all! We prefer winning!"

It is 'The Volunteer Spirit'.

Last summer, the people of Omaha were most puzzled by that spirit
After experiencing that 104 degree temperature on the last day of the CWS, I was puzzled why anyone would live in Omaha. I knew they had horrible winters but didn't realize it also got that hot there.

Let me ask another question? Can you think of a game where the other team got screwed over by the refs and we won or a ranking we were given that was too high or unearned?

The most annoying thing about game threads is those who never stop saying "the refs are out to get us..." and they're surly when you question them about it.

I've spent time at Ohio State and they're the same way as many of our fans and incredibly annoying with the "us against everyone" mentality. They are the absolute worst fanbase to deal with because they think EVERYONE hates them.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Have a chip on your shoulder and a persecution complex and yeah..... eventually everyone will hate you.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe everybody does hate them.

They should. Ohio State brings it on themselves with the "Ohio against everyone" and "They hate us because they can't beat us without cheating" and off the chart brand arrogance.

Like GA fans, when tOSU is good their fans become three times more punchable.

I'd prefer UT fans not become "they're all out to get us" and "they try to keep us from winning" and THAT narcissistic. No team has a "conspiracy of refs" against them though you'd not know that by watching a football or basketball thread on VN.

THE Tennessee Volunteers!

OSU stole that idea from THE VolNation.

I can prove it!!

Your first question is in the eye of the beholder. If you ask a Syracuse fan who was around in '98, they'll scream bloody murder about the PI call on Will Allen at the end of the game. Fans only see what they want to see when it comes to officiating.

The first event that comes to mind isn't football, but the FSU game in the CWS last year. Blake Burke should have struck out and the game would have been over.

We still might have gone on to win the CWS - I still think the Vols were the best team in that tournament, but it is much harder to win it all when you lose the first game.

That was the first game that came to mind

I tend to agree, but there are some games that stand out as very suspect, and it against the same opponents generally. The 2019 and 2023 Bama games come to mind, and some of the calls and non-calls were inexcusably one-sided in those games.

Although on balance, I don’t think there is a bias, it’s just awful officiating.

There are some VERY suspicious calls and I've commented about it in game threads but some folks here are probably already talking in the basketball forum about how UT is going to be screwed by the refs in the tournament. They talked about it before we played in Columbus like it was given.

That kind of crap is narcissistic. "We're so good they have to screw us....." just like Ohio State fans often do before their games start.

The SEC makes millions. Full-time, professional, vetted and trained officials should be a no brainer to insure the best conference has the highest quality officials to officiate the highest caliber athletes. SEC officials are bad, not biased as much as just substandard.

For all sports, in many threads posters share that refs, media, the power brokers hate UT and do everything they can to keep us from ‘moving on’ and having success. If this is true, my question is why? If it’s about money, don’t our fans travel well and viewership is high when we play? Are they jealous of us? Do they think we are a bunch of illiterate hillbillies? Are they still offended because we didn’t want Schiano? What is the reason we are so hated and disrespected?

😂😂😂 Brother, ever fan base in America feels this way—even those such as Bama and Duke that get the benefit of the doubt from refs and media time & again.

With the above said, I don’t mind saying the fouls on Okpara with :30 to go against Auburn and Mashack’s foul with 5:00 to go against Florida were both calls that should eliminate those refs from working the NCAA tournament. Both were beyond awful.

BS. That was 1000% a 50/50 call.

It was 100% a swing. Your opinion is the same if it happened against us?

The bat went all the way through the hitting zone. If the swing continued any further, hell, he would have been in the very beginning of the follow through.

My reply is exactly the same if it had been an FSU batter. You’re wrong and replays prove it. Bat was right at the point a legitimate call could’ve been made either way.
