My dad played football and ran track for UT in 69 and 70 (I could be off a year or so). I'm a huge UT fan and supporter, but my dad never really seems willing to give them credit for anything. Even the championship year, he doubted them and talked about them folding during the entire season. Almost like he was expecting them to fail. After being on this site for a while now, I see that tons of UT fans act the same way. WTF is up with this mentality?? Do people realize just how good UT has been for a really long time?? My wife went to Iowa and I live in Big Ten country so I often compare the two leagues and its teams and fans. I never hear Iowa fans be constantly critical of their teams. Even after their crappy year they still support their kids and are looking to next season. They swear up and down that the guys they have are sooo good. UT fans, on the other hand, just seem to never be satisfied. Iowa fans are happy and looking forward to the new recruits hitting the weight room and helping the program win in a couple years when they are physically and mentally ready to help the team chase a title. UT fans are *****ing moaning about a class ranked #13 in the country. Thats nothing to sneeze at. Am I dont want to hear about what the other SEC teams do in recruiting. Why cant fans be excited about the new kid's ability to work hard and help in an year or so, instead of expecting these kids to produce in year one or two. (championships are not won with frosh and sophs.)

Just wondering why UT people seem to be eternally negative about a school and program that really is top notch. UT deserves better fans that dont constantly complain and create unnecessary pressure for their players and coaches.

I know its not ALL, but it seems to be a lot more than other schools. Please, can someone explain this to me???

The internet is not a very good measurement of how things are really going amongst the fans. If Neyland was half full for a Florida game, we would probably have something to fear. The whole problem is the media's access to the message boards and certain people in the media's ability to overstate things among the fans. I think that the state of the VolNation itself is good right now. We have stability and are back on the track UT should be on with Dooley at the helm. Will we win with Dooley, we will see by next year.

When you get the answer let me know. I have lived with a voldad who wants coaches fired every year and none of our players can do anything well. He does like Dooley though. I don't think you'll get answers on here...GO vOLS! Vol4life!!

Saying that with almost 60% or more of the team being sophomores or younger, you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. I think we can win 8 games this year.

I am thinking 7-5 is far more likely.

Why would I be setting myself up for disappointment? Our toughest games that make or break the season year in and year out are played in October.

When I was in Knoxville some of the media certainly liked to overstate things. It got old.

I think the negavols get more playtime on here. I do not think that is the overall feeling/attitude of VN. It is kind of like the news I guess... the only thing you ever see are the negative/depressing stories. Always easier to ***** about something than to praise. Unsure why human nature is like that.

I for one am excited in our direction, from the recentdeparture of CCS to our new class! No matter what, IT IS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!

just the whole 3 years of coaching changes, losing players, arrests, and now the looming ncaa problems have made fans worried and a little frustrated. Hopefully everything will turn out ok with the ncaa and tennessee will win at least 8 games this year, that will lighten the mood on here.

GO VOLS

There are a few million Vol fans, this board is just a few hundred of the most opinionated ones. Most fans I know don't follow recruiting, could care less about coaching changes other than the head coach. They starting getting anxious in late August, and are ready to support the team no matter what. I think there are a numerous always positive types on this board. Unfortunately, negativity triggers a response and that is what alot of news is about these days. Everyone reports violations, drug incidents, problems; rarely do they give front page service to a team visiting a hospital or supporting their community. I guess that is too boring.

I think these site hoppers are fans from other SEC schools & they just sign on as Vols & enjoy rippin our players, coaches, and of course other TRUE VOLS!!! The Vols have been a TOP DOG in the SEC, Hell the nation for some decades so these laptop sissys will hate all they can when we have a few bad years. They sure as HELL ain't going to say a word in the face of anyone sporting the orange & white!!! GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the criticism I see aimed at the Vols from supporters is of the constructive variety. It's far better to point out the flaws and suggest remedies than to just ignore them, cross your fingers, and hope they'll go away.

I don't think former players and fans are comparable.

The pressure is there whether we like it or not. Dooley hit the nail on the head when he said this was his most important class. He knows he doesn't have 10 years to get this done.

High expectation and it should be that way. I would HATE to be part of something that accepts mediocrity.

It's a message board. I hope you're not forming your opinion on what you read here. There are a certain few who seem to have a lot to say about who we have as coaches but for some odd reason don't direct any of that frustration at the guy who keeps hiring them.

Tough, odd crowd in here.

Very well said! Only thing is that if Iowa wins a national championship, the expectation level changes. If Northwestern and Indiana won a national championship then the expectation level would change. The minority of UT fans that are always complaining seem to do so when we compare our 6-Championship level program to the ones around us. I'm sure Bama fans were doing the same during the Shula, Francione era! It can be good in some ways, because that negative vibe is the same one you get when you have demanding parents that don't accept failure as an option! Sometimes it can ruin a child, but there are a lot of kids out there that wish they had those parents rather than the ones that just look forward to the next cold one.

If you listen to John Pennington every week he reminds Vol fans about how overreactionary, negative and just plain wrong our fanbase is. He is, in his own mind, Tennessee's moral compass.
