Why are the helmet cages so antiquated?

In the modern game—where they are supposedly trying to protect a player’s head and neck and all—I ask: Does it help a player to be running around with a metal duck bill protruding a foot out from the helmet? One that can be facemasked, or used literally as a weapon...what does that length
and girth actually do to “protect” a player?

The enlightened ones out there, please educate me.

How about something like this. Helmet connecting to pads

Looks like it would restrict head movement (ie looking around to see the guy about to give you a concussion). Other than that it's pretty sweet.

It's called safety

The reality is that the safer the equipment has gotten, the more violent the game gets.
While attaching the helmet to the pads would help with neck injuries, it would also allow the players to lead with their heads without fear.
The plastic pads and helmets coupled with sports center and other sports shows wanting to show big hits has also led the players away from proper tackling and towards the players just lunging with their arms at their sides.

Sadly until players start approaching the game with safety in mind, there is no equipment that will do anything but make the game more violent.
If you went back to leather helmets and pads I guarantee most of these players would knock off the “big hit” crap and go back to proper tackling. But by taking away the plastic you’d also still have idiot players playing like they still had it and would still be causing major head injuries to themselves and others

I completely agree with this. If anyone doubts this, they should go YouTube an old game from the 50s or 60s. The equipment is nothing. The technique is equally different to match the equipment.

I'm not sure how to solve it without laying the players down with so much protection that they can't move. They are trying rules now. We'll see if the stats best them out as effective.

You normally don’t see ‘length and girth’ mentions on this type of chat board....😂😂

Good point. I would like to see facemasks changes up a bit.

I can’t comment on the length and girth part as I am not qualified in that area.
