Why are so many here scared of high expectations?

Stop with this fiction.

Nobody expected anything from us in 2014. We were the only team in college football replacing all our starters along the offensive and defensive lines. We were planning to play 20+ true freshmen. Most said we would not reach a bowl game. That team exceeded expectations by going 7-6.

In 2015 you had a few blowharts like myself predicting a 10-2 season plus maybe an upset victory in the SEC championship game. However, most had us predicted to finish second in the east. Guess where we finished? 2nd in the east. The AP and coaches poll had us as the #25 team in the preseason poll. Guess where we finished at the end of the season? #22 and #23 respectively in the AP and coaches poll. Vegas had the over/under on our regular season win total at 7.5 games. Guess what? We won 8 games.

So you're completely wrong about this team falling short of expectations the last 2 years. In fact, if we look objectively, they slightly EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS both seasons.

Many people in the media picked us to beat Florida last year and had us as a dark horse to win the East. Expectations were high last year and are very high this year. But until we start living up to those expectations I will be skeptical. Doesn't make me any less a fan.

We were ranked in the preseason top 10 those years?

I'm sorry but I remember those years. Some thought we were a fringe top 25 team. Sorta like last year. And maybe we could surprise.

But we were not the overwhelming favorite to win the east. We were not a leading national title contender according to Vegas.

So please stop with the fiction. I'm a self avowed bandwagon fan. If Tennessee was a true contender back then, you would've heard from me on here.

You're not qualified, you have no vested interest in the Vols. Sure you're around for the good times, but are ready to checkout at any sign of adversity.

By the way there were many that expected more out of the last two years. CBJ never should have tried to redshirt Dobbs either year. JD should have came in and starting his 1st year. The way we lost some games made them worse.

They are waiting for the party to start, but it started back in Tampa and will end in Tampa.

It's gonna be a blast.

See you in Tampa.

Reggie Davis dropped a wide open TD pass... That would have tied the game

They also had a 99 yard fumble recovery TD while we were at their 1 yard line and they had a punt return TD count even with a blatant block in the back.

If you wanna say we got 1 lucky break, I would argue they got 2.

No. My official prediction was 10-2.

I only argued that 11-1 was possible along with a playoff run.

And really if you look at our season and how closely we played 2 playoff teams (Oklahoma and Alabama), it was certainly possible.

Total BS. Your post I linked predicted "much better than all of the media experts" - including those in the media predicting 10-2.

Its possible that if things breaks right for us, that we could go 11-1, win the SEC Championship, and maybe make a cinderella run to the national championship like Ohio State did last season.

Really?? Did you watch the game? We were down 21 points and had to claw our way back into the game. And still needed a late 4th quarter td to win.

Josh Smith caught a horribly thrown bullet to start that comeback as well.
I was just tickled sh**tless that we competed with every team we played last year. They knew that they had played a tough team.

Not really. There were a few loud voices saying we would win the east. Maybe it seemed like everyone because our biggest cheerleaders were the guys on the SEC network. But most picked Georgia.

We were #25 in the preseason polls. I wouldn't call that high expectations.

If that's high expectations, then we exceeded them last year cause we finished #22 and #23 in the final AP and coaches polls.

It's not the fear of failure, it's the pain of failure. You wouldn't understand, being a jumper and all.

Party in Tampa January 9, 2017.

Actually I do. Every loss hurt excruciatingly bad last year given my high expectations for the team. But that's the beauty of sports. Losing when you believe you'll win.

A lot of people think I jumped off the team in the down years because of the pain of losing. Nope. I never had expectations to win then so the losses didn't hurt.

It was the POOR PRODUCT. Tennessee football was a pretty bad product for the last 10 years. And as a fan I enjoy watching a good product.

Butch didn't have to figure out whether to go for 2 or kick the extra point.

Ha. Good one.

That being said, piss off gator. I'm no fan of Butch, but that doesn't mean I'm ok with a gator fan bashing him.

You let us worry about Butch, you focus on what ole butter teeth over there is doing.

You have no loyalty along with no loss. When the going gets tough, D4H just goes.

It's worth having you around, it means we are back. If only you weren't a total embarrassment to the program.

See you in Tampa.

We weren't preseason Top 10 but we had enough hype to be immensely disappointed by the end of the season.

THIS is likely the "why?" in a nutshell.

Except Shoop won't let this happen, presumably. Good gracious, at how many 4th downs BG, OU and FL were able to exploit.

The crazy stat is how many we converted too. 2015 was the year of 4th down conversions. It's Florida's only hope for 2016, convert all 4th downs. They are in so much trouble come 9-24.

See you in Tampa.

Living life in general and being a Vol fan specifically, has taught me to expect nothing good to happen (Book of Catbone) so you won't be disappointed. But when something good happens you can celebrate like hell.

We were probably a preseason 15-20 team with people wondering how our offense would shake out... and then we got the worst QB play in the history of the world.

Maybe it's because I checked out for most of the last decade but can you remind me when people had expectations this high about Tennessee football only to be let down?

I don't think we've been ranked in the preseason top 10 since 2005.

If folks had high expectations from 2006-2014 only to be letdown, they only have themselves to blame because nobody else considering Tennessee a national title contender during that timeframe.

So please tell me about all these times Tennessee football has fallen short of expectations like this in the last decade?

Well for one, I was at Gameday when they came for the Florida game and we were expected to win that game. That memory still sits fresh in my head and can't stop thinking about that entire season to this day. We got let down big time. Um the Music City Bowl with UNC. Huge letdown with it being 80% Vols fans in the stadium. I was at that game too unfortuantely. The SEC Championship game where Eric Ainge crapped the bed by throwing a pick in red zone at the end of the game. I'm pretty sure a lot of people were expecting a lot the following year in which we didn't even make a bowl game. People were expecting a lot when Kiffin got here because of the coaches he brought with him and the recruiting. And as far as heartbreak goes it's kinda hard to beat what happened last year. If you weren't expecting things from 2006-2014 then shame on you and you were part of the problem. If you are a fan you support your team through thick and thin. You sir are the definition of a fair weather fan. I'm sure Eric Berry would love to know you support the team now but could care less when he was there. Oh and I never mentioned a national title but I was expecting to make at least one other SEC Championship during that time frame. I'm sure a lot of other posters will tell you they were expecting the same thing. I'm sorry but it's hard to just forget that all that happened and act like we're guaranteed a NC. I'll always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst after these last 10 years.

No. When the product gets crappy I stop watching.

I'm a big Lakers and Kobe fan when it comes to basketball. Yet I stopped watching them play the last couple of years because the product became bad. Kobe became a shell of himself and the team was terrible as a result.

Same thing with the Vols. When the product gets bad I stop watching.

And guess what? We were a 4th and goal stop against Oklahoma in OT and a 4th and 14 stop against Florida from being 11-1 last year with a second chance against Alabama in the SEC championship.

I fully believe that if we hang on against Oklahoma and Florida we beat Arkansas. Alabama would still be too much to handle in Tuscaloosa. But I would have loved our chances against them in a rematch in Atlanta.

Team 119 was a few plays away from making me look like a psychic.

We were also a SCAR red zone fumble and a Von Pearson falling down catch/ Josh Smith in the wrong place at the right time catch/ UGA easy dropped TD pass/ Brian Randolph tip away from being 6-6. Point is when we played a team last year with similar talent it was a close game. Same thing happened in 2014, if O'brien or Barnett get called for roughing the passer at SCAR we're a 5-7 team again
