Why are Replacement Windows so Damn Expensive?

Just got a quote for 5 bedroom windows - nothing special - almost $7000. This is from a Champion type company and comparable quality.

Years ago got a quote and price was about a grand a window.

Why are they so expensive?

I'm sticking with what I got...
That's only $1,400 per window.

Companies that specialize in replacement windows and that’s it, will be the most expensive and usually have the less quality. Order the replacement windows and pay a reputable smaller company to install. You will come out on top.

Bumping this thread for any recent experience with whole house window replacement. I have ~30 windows and got quoted over $50K. This was not Anderson or Pella, they said their manufacturer is Alside. I was expecting it to cost about half what they quoted, so needless to say I was pretty shocked. Admittedly I don't know if this is a reasonable quote and my expectations are crazy, or the other way around. I'll of course be reaching out for other quotes, but if anyone in middle Tennessee area had a good experience I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I had over 20 replaced late last year and went with Simonton for around 15k. All are DP vinyl but around 7 of them went with wood grain finish on inside for a look we were wanting. That adds a lot to the cost. If all were white standard would’ve been around 13k. The best cost/quality combo is Okna, but they were over 8 weeks lead time and would’ve bumped up to around 19k. Supposedly they’re worth it, but the timeline didn’t work and decided to take the savings. Installer did great and we love them. Quinn Windows in the Atlanta area. Stay away from Window World.

Might be worth a look at Zen Windows. When I was remodeling my house in NC we had quotes from all the big vendors, Pella, Anderson, Marvin, Window World... Zen was less than half the price for the same quality double pane windows. And they did excellent work. Plus they don't have to come out and do a big fancy presentation with the hard sell tactics. I am not sure if they are in Middle Tennessee.

Yeah, talk to a local building supply company or two in addition to lowes/Home Depot. They usualy have a good window with whatever you want . ie, Low E
