Why are Kickers ranked so low?

I think a lot of it has to do with that fact that kicking is such a mental thing. You really can only judge kickers on how far they can kick and how accurate they are. It's not often in high school that kickers get a lot of chances to win games, so it's hard to judge how clutch a kicker is.

Obviously the people who rank these guys didn't hold the kicking game in near as high regard as Neyland did!

I don't get this mentality though. Kicking is such a huge part of the game. Palardy is the perfect example of this. When your kicker sucks, it's a serious problem and when he's awesome it's a huge help.

Are there just not that many elite kickers? (No one is ranked above a 3 star per rivals and 247)

It's just an opinion of someone at 247, rivals, scout, or espn. Some of these get that opinion from businesses that evaluate kickers, punters and snappers (ie: Kohls, sailer, or pro kicker). So go these sites and see if the kicker, punter, or snapper is a 5* they have seen the athletes multiple times at camps and rate them by stars. Ranking will depend on the last time they saw the athlete, if you don't go to their camp you fall in the ranks.

I've seen Wilhoit mention that kickers are likely the most difficult position to evaluate due to the fact that there are so few "qualified" evaluators, i.e. most services don't employ or invest in personnel that has enough experience to make an accurate assessment.

And I completely agree, the position incorporates a mental aspect that is near impossible to forecast.

Its because there is so few good ones is high school. Most schools have the long hair stoner off the soccer team kick or the fat kid from the OL.

Same reason there are no kickers in the NFL HOF. They're extremely replacable at every level and when in doubt, line up and go for it.

Shane Lechler and Randy Bullock are two of the best to ever come out of TAMU and I doubt there were more than 2*'s next to their names while they were in HS.

Lechler should be in the NFL HOF now, even while still playing, and Randy.....well Randy is not having a very good year. Just my thoughts.
