Why all the hate from memphis fans?

i still don't know.

If anything, it's a one sided rivalry. It only means something on a year in year out basis to Memphis fans.

I know I'm stretching.......

Who has the better "history" in football...UT or Auburn?
Most will say UT, but Auburn has a 25-21-3 series record. Hell...UT only has a 14-13-2 series record vs DUKE! Don't give me the series record vs Memphis. Would you trade the history of UT basketball with Memphis??? I would!

i'll be the first to admit Memphis has done wonders to improve it's facade down town and touristy activities with beale st and peabody place, the ball park etc....since i left. when i moved to Knoxville 15 years ago, i truly thought memphis sucked.

granted, i'm not willing to move back, but as i've come back to visit over the years, it's better now than when i left.

UT has the edge on all time series in b-ball with Memphis.

And no, I would not trade anything with memphis.

Also, as for football, the only 2 teams in the SEC who have a series advantage on UT is Auburn and Bama.

UT leads Auburn in every other category (like championships) and that loss in 1900 was devastating

Well??? I know it's not UK or Vandy, but still! It's a state University with better tradition than ours! You must admit that!

but this still does not equate a "rivalry".

UT is and always will be a football first school.
Basketball was an afterthought until 3 years ago.

If Memphis had 6 football championships and a 17-14 record against us, then yes.

I really do think they just have a Napoleon complex for in state recognition.

Hold on....I'm not bashing UT sports. Just don't give me the "series record" with Memphis in basketball. That means nothing. UF and LSU are better teams than UT in football (right now), but UT has a series advantage.

this is where you lose me every single time.

no one cares about Memphis's "tradition". with all that tradition, they still have as many titles as we do. and it's not like they've been to 10 final fours or something.

they've been to two. they've made it to the elite 8 more than we have. yippee. throw a party.:snoring:

Rivalries are developed because of what the other team has done 20+ years ago. they are developed by what the two teams do to each other over time.

getting psyched about a game because the other team you're playing brings in tradition is the moniker of a no nothing program just happy to be on the same field/court as the almighty____________.

i'll switch it around for you. if you guys suddenly wind up playing say, UNC.....is UNC now a rival of Memphis because they have more tradition than you?

uh, no.

Maybe???? They are not THE state univ. But in baskeball, they are above UT in that sport in the "history" of the Universities.

Peay, stop trying to make a dollar out of a dime. This is not a rivalry IMO. It coud bloom into a very exciting one over the next 5-10 years in basketball only. Memphis FB will never be on the level of UT FB. But if both teams remain strong over the next few years and there is no coaching turnover, then this could blossom into one of the best rivalries in basketball.

Not a state University! End of discussion! I never said it is or should be UK or Vandy, but still a rivalry.

I know I will never win this discussion here.....but this will be a great game and I hope it makes it a Rivalry in your minds!

If Memphis wins....will next years game be a rivalry???

I think that all this talk, although I'm COMPLETELY sick of hearing about it and just ready for the game by now, has to be great for both schools. It is either helping fuel the rivalry or develop one however you choose to view it. I think that everyone is just so damn excited that they just need someone to pick a fight with to help control themselves.

Memphis is just a city that will eventually self implode. With their crooked government and unemployed citizens, and ridiculous crime rate, it is hard to feel sorry for them.

The Memphis and national news were overrun recently by a story about the Winkler's in Selmer. Be careful about casting stones there notrod.

it wont' take that long. if we continue to play each other at a high level, it can blossom in to a big game pretty quickly. but for it to grow, both teams have to be good, and both teams have to win.

you're not going to get this to a big rivalry game if one of them comes in 12-10 on a regular basis.
