Why all the hate from memphis fans?

I've been casually reading Memphis message boards today.

Why all the extreme Vols hate from them? I don't get it...

Did I miss something? Whats the deal...? My mom and Dad, aunt and uncle all did undergrad at memphis State and graduate school at UT. I have never looked at this as a big rivalry for obvious reasons I guess.


Anyone have the inside scoop on the jealousy?

Because no matter how good a basketball team they manage to buy, they'll always be Tiger High.

Actually its because they feel TN gets all of the state money for the school and Memphis gets overlooked for everything. I don't hate TN (maybe has something to do with the fact I go here), but a lot of them feel that they get overlooked for the big money and national exposure. But I mean seriously, when you are a weak academic school then what can you expect?

I can see that....but I mean, UT is the university of the whole state.

Wasn't Memphis private way back in the day? it just seems like TSU should be complaining too....

I still dont get it. Is it football? I mean, yeah, we usually beat them...so what? we're SEC.

Is it basketball? We've never done anything in this sport.

It baffles me.

Well, they DO have awesome BBQ. But other than that all Memphis has going for it is a high crime rate. It's jealousy plain and simple. Seriously, if you were offered a scholorship to UT and an identical deal at Memphis, where would you go?

It's because they think we are their "rival". Poor Memphis, they suck so bad no one even wants to be their rival.
The fact that they hate us because of money issues is a testament to their idiocracy. I haven't seen them do anything proactive to try and remedy this situation. All they do is whine and bitch all the time like a five year old who didn't get his nap time. Grow up and freaking deal with it! Start doing something positive instead of blaming everyone else for your problems. Half of the people in that God forsaken city are lazy potheads and the other half are wannabe gangsters. No wonder a real educational institution wants nothing to do with you!

Frankly, if I'm a one and done bball player, I'm looking for the best looking girls. Ask me 4 years ago and I say Memphis, ask me now? Knoxville.

No. Memphis was founded in 1912 as a public common school. It is essentially WTSU.

up until very recently, the answer wasn't the same for both.

Memphis is not suffering for exposre the last 4-5 years in bball, just like we haven't exactly suffered the past 3.

a win by us Saturday i think, despite my views on the fragile esteem of the Memphis fan base, means more to us froma recruiting standpoint than it does for Memphis.

As a lifelong Tennessee fan that just happens to be a junior at Memphis I can give you the first hand, up close and personal reasons that Memphis fans hate Tennesse. For starters they hate us because we get the national attention and they don't. Yeah they have a top notch basketball program but what else do they have??? They don't like us because we're the state of Tennessee's number one school and they're not even second. They hate us because we have owned them in football for 30plus years now. They hate us because we've done more with our basketall program in the past ten years then they've done since they've been a school. They hate us because we support every Tennessee sport, mens and womens, not just mens basketball. They hate us because we travel. They hate us because we're everything that they wish that they could be. I for one think that Memphis is overrated this year but I'm glad that they didn't lose Saturday. I want to be the team that hands them their first lost. Ibelieve that it is going to be a great game and win or lose we'll still be in the tournament come March and they'll still choke. I wouldn't doubt that they don't make it past the elite eight again.

1st....I'm a UT fan!

I went to a smaller state Univ in TN, I now work at a smaller state Univ in TN. Whenever Tech, AP, Mem, TSU, Martin, UTC, ETSU plays UT, they think it's a HUGE deal. Not out a envy, but UT is THE state Univ.

Memphis is the ONLY school in TN that can claim any +"s vs UT. Basketball only!!!!!!

These games better be a rivalry to UT fans...because what happens when UT loses to any of them??? It does not happen often, but how sad was it when Mem. won in football in 1997??? 1996??? When MTSU beat UT in the NIT in the late 80's? It's VERY rare, but how embarresed would it be to lose to any of them? That is what makes it a rivalry!
