Why all the Fulmer hate?

I didn't forget anything. Eastern Division titles are NOT SEC championships. Two titles in 16/17 years is not formidable obviously, although one could say PF was the King of minor bowl invitations, and 30+ of his wins were against UK and Vandy. So, opinions vary on PF as a HC. Hopefully he will be a success as AD.

2/16>0/10, 2/5 chances>0/0 chances, have to at least get to the game to win it

I was just getting accustomed to Fulmer as the lovable, big teddy bear of a guy, getting some due respect and love as a former national title winning coach, as he quietly faded into the twilight, occasionally showing up for some awards and standing ovations.

And then, poof, that vision, gone. Fulmer is back as a power-player, mover and shaker, pushing buttons and pulling levers at the highest levels of the athletic department. Gone is the sweet innocence of retirement, and back is at least a hint of a conniving, manipulative man who may smile to your face only to shove a knife through your back as soon as you turn away.

I liked the resuscitated, affable Fulmer, not the “in charge of the entire UT athletics” Fulmer.

I think there is a place in Vol history to honor and acknowledge PF his accomplishments which were huge. That said his last few years were an effort that failed. His hires were poor and his teams performed poorly. He had to be let go. There's no need to trash the guy.

See, this I can understand, and even agree with, especially at the time. In hindsight, I think we would have been better off "promoting" him to AD and moving Cutcliffe to HC at end of 2007. Then having Cutcliffe build staffs that could take over when he retired ormoved on.

And you’re a Gators fan...so that’s as ringing an endorsement as can be got! :yahoo:

He ran the program into the ground.

Nope! The ignorant portion of the fan base did. You and the rest of your cousins scared lil' Hamilton into screwing up the program for the last 10 years. Luckily, Fulmer is back now and he can begin fixing a decade of mistakes.

Soory for the mistake, thanks for correcting me.:)

only reason I know is because I was at the game. Schuler lined up at the goal and everyone in our section was saying he would run it in. The only ones that didnt know was the BC defense. Game was in the big sombrero.

His second to last class was #4, behind only Florida in the SEC.

You ever go back and look at that class?

It had to have set some kind of record for 4 and 5 stars that barely contributed or didn't at all. The super busts Brent Vinson and Kenny O'Neal. Ahmad Paige...did he even play a down for Tennessee? Ben Martin...injuries I think. Chris Donald...another super bust. Donald Langley...did he even play a down? Rolando Melancon...never even enrolled. Signed his letter then went back to Louisiana. Sawtelle ended up going back north didn't he?

I can't remember everyone, but much of that class was a non factor for Tennessee.

And don't forget Taj Boyd who KIFFIN told he couldn't play for him and did a little playing at Clemson. (Maybe this was the start to the Clemson connection??????)

E cred. It's like money in the bank to some

The Gruden bubble destroyed consumer confidence in likes.

I saw children playing marbles with funf millionen Likesmark notes in those threads.

Caused a hyperinflation where one "GTFO" became roughly equal to several hundred OMG history lessons.

People are funny.

The only problem with your idea is that PF wouldn't take the AD job because he was determined to surpass Neyland's all time wins record as HC. And, a couple more seasons, even lackluster ones, and he probably would have surpassed Neyland. He alluded to that idea, at least subtly, as one of his goals, but the pink slip didn't allow him to achieve that .

He was fired because of the EXPECTATIONS at that time.

The BCS was still around and wins became more about "how much did you win by?"

We were getting used to the every 3 years Tennessee winning the EAST Division but we kept LOSING in the SEC Championship.

Hypothetically lets say that Saban and Alabama don't win a National Championship or get in the the playoffs for next 4 years. He'll be GONE even if he continues to lose just 1-2 games a season.

A man that will hate on Fulmer has got a great big empty hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it! He needs Revenge. For what you may ask.
Bein’ borned.

Silly talk. No one sets their calendar to that standard. As my handle suggests all Bama fans are just riding the wave.

When it's over we will be looking for the next big one to hang ten. Aloha!

Ok, I have to ask. Where does all this deep seated actual hate and loathing of all things Phillip Fulmer come from?

Sincerely, I want to know, because I really don't get it. All he did was win for us. Sure he had 2 bad seasons out of 16. But even the 2005 season, we were competitive. While we should have done better (and did the next year) it's not the crap show that we saw this past season. The biggest affront I can find on this season is the loss to Vandy.

2008 could arguably be compared more to this past season, but even then, we didn't lose to Vandy and Kentucky in the same year. And by all accounts, the Wyoming game was thrown in protest by the players.

So explain to me why a coach with these record and accomplishments is so reviled with such venom, please. I truly just don't get it.

Head coaching record
Overall 152–52
Bowls 8–7

Accomplishments and honors

Championships
1 National (1998)
2 SEC (1997, 1998)
SEC Eastern Division (1997, 1998, 2001, 2004, 2007)

Awards
AFCA Coach of the Year (1998)
Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (1998)
George Munger Award (1998)
Home Depot Coach of the Year Award (1998)
Sporting News College Football COY (1998)
SEC Coach of the Year (1998)

College Football Hall of Fame
Inducted in 2012

13-31
13-34
3-41
3-30

Those are losses in our biggest games during the 2002 season. Just two years removed from the nation's no. 1 signing class and a preseason no. 5 ranking.

Make no mistake, Fulmer was a good coach for part of the 90s, but after that 2001 SECCG, a slide to mediocrity started. He shares partly in the blame for why we are in our current condition

It's not hate to point out FACTS about his tenure.
