Why add a team like Oregon to our schedule?

A Zone read offense is something we have shown we can't defend......

I'm all for the "draw the line in the sand" attitude, but sometimes you have to step back and look at what could be best for us over the course of the season.......

So no one is w/ me on this one...........

If we beat Florida, LSU, and Bama I would think we would be in the hunt for big things, but if couple that w/ a loss to an Oregon team that could lose to someone their not suppose too and it could hurt us.......

From the responses, you are alone in your thoughts.

If you want respect around the country, you have to beat big teams around the country, not just the big teams in the SEC.

give Monte a year to prepare for the zone read and players to defend it and i guarantee we will shut it down

You're lookin at this the wrong way. This game has more risk/less reward for Oregon next year. We lose, no big deal, they're pretty good. We win, look out world, the vols are back.

No you don't.........

Beat everyone in the SEC and win the SEC championship game and you will have the respect of the country....

We don't need "big games" outside of the SEC.....

We aren't Boise State, TCU, Etc.......

all true but this game was scheduled before Kiffin. it's tradition(apparently) to open the season with a pac 10 opponent.

I knew he didn't schedule the game. The post was in reference to the vols fans that are scared to play hard opponents. Like the people who want to play wisconsin or northwestern, not because of the new years day thing, but because it's an easy win in thier eyes and their scared of VA tech. Ive stated this before, I knew that this staff was going to be diffrent when Bryce Brown broke a 30 yd run against WKU and instead of a pat on the butt and a way to go, LIKE FULMER WOULD HAVE DONE, the whole coaching staff came over and grilled him, yelling and screaming and pointing to bench as if to say he was getting benched, All because he stepped out of bounds to avoid contact.

I Believe in what kiffin is doing, and i'm sure that he would tell you he wants the chance to knock off a top 10 team over beating up on a cupcake

The return trip to Oregon isn't scheduled until 2013, which is good for me because by then my kids will be old enough to board for a week or ten days. Oregon is a great place to visit.

I like playing games like this. It's good for recruiting, good for national exposure, and it's a hell of a lot more fun than just frogstomping somebody like Arkansas State yet again. I don't see the downside. It has nothing to do with the SEC championship, which is the primary goal every year, so the only way it can hurt you is if you A) plan to contend for a national championship, in which case you better be able to win these games anyway, or B) need the extra win to get into a bowl game, in which case who the hell cares? The tangible positives far outweigh the hypothetical negatives, IMO.

Are you a season ticket holder?

Look at it this way. The Cal win was one of the biggest wins of the decade. The frau and I turned the return trip into a 10 day vacation, with some backpacking, a weekend in San Francisco, etc. A great trip even if the game didn't go so well.

Or we could have just played two boring home dates against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2006 and MTSU in 2007. No thanks.

Because we're Tennessee.

Does no one here love competition? Do any cats in here not love facing off (even in their personal life/ job) against the best. It breeds greatness. I've even seen some pissing and moaning over playing VTech (a top 15er) instead of some podunk Big 10 team in the Outback. C'mon man.

Because we're Tennessee.

Guys we're in a new era now. Whether Oregon was already scheduled or not makes no difference. We now have a coaching staff that has the ability to prepare our players for any team from any conference. True, I know next year is still gonna be a rebuilding year. But what the heck, you start beating teams like Oregon followed up by the "smash-mouth" ball clubs we play here in the S.E.C. and then you show the country, not to mention the young kids waiting to make their decision on what school they're gonna apply their talants at, that Big Orange Country is where it's happening. I think we"ll all have a different mindset in a couple of years. Bring the best and the hell with the rest, GO VOLS............

The team and coaches already do. Maybe if some of our purse wielding fans would have the same mindset, we'll be good.

i wholeheartedly agree. i also welcome the challenge of facing the best in the country... but some years we don't even have to leave the SEC to do that

I'm not sure when the second Cincy game is. Either way, I don't like that UT has to play these games and then follow up with Florida and then whatever the SEC throws at us after. I wish we could play UF later.
