Why a new OC?

He waisted most of the year on Hurd instead of playing the better backs. It was clear that we had two backs on our team that were better than hurd. He is super predictable. Too many screens to the receivers. Any coordinator could put up decent numbers with the playmakers that we had.

That may be true, but if you eliminate the turnovers (a problem through the South Carolina game), we would have only lost to Bama (to that point). This team scored more points (473) than ANY previous Tennessee team.

Without the turnovers of the first part of the season and the defensive drop-off (largely due to injuries) of the last part of the season, we may have ONLY lost to Bama this season.

Go Vols!

I'm not trying to argue with you or anyone else my friend, I'm just curious...

If Helfrich is such an elite O mind and he's such a great recruiter that he can recruit against the best in the business then why did he get fired?

VFL...GBO!!!

He got fired as a head coach. We wouldn't be bringing him in to be a head coach.

Because they are averaging 13.5 ppg against Alabama and 22.5 ppg against FL in 4 seasons.

Feasting on the back half of the schedule and padding stats against lesser opponents is all well and good but figuring out how to perform better against our major rivals should be the goal at this point.

This is more of where I am at. How do we do when and where it counts. It is those games where the offense has to show something. That is the kind of competition you're gonna get in the CFP.

Oregon's defense was atrocious and cost them several games. The ducks' offense however was really productive at 35 pts/game and 491 yds/game...

☝ really wish we threw more deep balls to Malone and Jennings.

I don't think that ever happens unless Jones cedes the offense to another line of thinking.

Jones's QB's at Cincinnati were well under 8 yards per attempt for his three seasons.

Dobbs barely crept over 8 yards per attempt this season.

Mayfield at OK was nearly 10 ypa and Trubisky at NC was around 8.5 for a point of reference.

I think this quote after the SC game goes to the point you are making.

"They didn’t want to give up big plays and they didn’t. The other thing is what we see every week, and it’s been interesting, but what we’re seeing on film throughout the week, teams are changing it up. What you practice against is not always what you see in the game. That’s having to adjust with our players and things like that.

Mike DeBord: Teams look differently on film than in game

That is astonishing that an SEC OC would actually say something like that. Duh. Ya think?

It kind of stood out to me when he said it and left me shaking my head.

It's things like this that keeps me from jumping on the bandwagon with DeBord amidst them scoring the most points in the history of the program.

It's all well and good but there is some pretty clear room for improvement.

To be fair our scheme will call for a lot of screens that is just the nature of a spread like scheme... That's why you should see guys like Tyler Byrd excell in this scheme quick fast twich guys... That's also why Kelly will have a chance to make a big impact next year...

I don't think a new OC makes a bit of difference if Butch still micromanages it. Unless he takes his thumb off of whoever runs it, the product will still be the same.

Let's just for the sake of argument concede that Butch does "micromanage" the offense. What on earth have you been watching the past 2 or 3 years? Our offense is good. I think someone would have to be blind not to see that this system works. At times **>EVERY<** offense, be it college or the NFL, struggles from time to time. When we have we always bounce back just like **>GOOD<** offenses do. Besides this year, Alabama has had trouble with us.

I'll give you credit for at least giving some commmentary with your response unlike the mouthbreathers who break out the one liners fishing for likes.

However, you, like them, just assume that I'm calling for change for change sake. All I am saying is that those who ARE clamoring for change will be disappointed if they are expecting some offensive overhaul. Butch's ego isn't letting that happen. If people want to refute that he has an enormous ego and is stubborn to a fault, we can just stop now and agree to disagree.

And for those whose immediate retort is, "Well, Saban micromanages"; 1. Saban and his fistful of NC rings have earned that right, and 2. Butch isn't Saban. It's about time we stop comparing the two because they aren't even in the same league.

As for MY personal feelings about the offense, I can agree that it hasn't necessarily been the problem. If you average 30+ points, you should win 9+ games regularly. That said, I didn't care for the lack of creativity at times, a refusal to go downfield with the ball unless playing from way behind or up 20, and the occasional misuse of Dobbs as a runner. The offense wasn't always the problem, but it wasn't infallible.

Pretty sure this wasn't Butch's decision. I'm thinking the heat coming from the hell's kitchen that is the UT program was more than he could bare. First job offer and he was gone and I don't blame him.
