Why a new OC?

I don't think a new OC makes a bit of difference if Butch still micromanages it. Unless he takes his thumb off of whoever runs it, the product will still be the same.

Two thoughts come to my mind..

1. Still to predictable for my tastes.
2. Unwilling to take chances and 'go for the throat'.... IMO

Why do we need a new OC? Look at the offense after Hurd left.

Discuss

It's a popular bandwagon...

We need more consistency. While we did score a lot of points we were feast or famine - we punted the ball 70 times - only A&M and South Carolina punted more...I like sustained drives and this team just didn't do well in that department...was it the play calling or the execution? Maybe a little of both but I think with a new QB coming in who will probably be a more accurate passer, we may have better results with the existing OC...

Just curious but what evidence is there that this happens? I've heard it before but how do you know that Butch micromanages the offense and that Debord doesn't call the shots.

Although Dobbs wouldn't have needed to bail himself out of 3rd and long if he didn't have a tendency to over throw 4 out of 6 open receivers by about 5 feet.

Because our offense has looked like a hot turd on too many occasions for Butch to just be "okay" with DeBord's performance unless he was essentially executing what Butch wants.

Listen to one Butch Jones press conference and then tell me that guy doesn't have his hand in every aspect of the team. Why do you think he hired an olympic swimming coordinator to run the offense instead of going out and hiring a brilliant offensive mind?

So, do I have any "evidence"? No, no smoking gun. But I think anyone who can evaluate Jones' ego and the DeBord hire can get a sense that he brought in someone who would run "his system" and not threaten his position.

Maybe I'm way off though.

Because they are averaging 13.5 ppg against Alabama and 22.5 ppg against FL in 4 seasons.

Feasting on the back half of the schedule and padding stats against lesser opponents is all well and good but figuring out how to perform better against our major rivals should be the goal at this point.

We need a QB coach, not two OL coaches that have overseen the regression of our OL. Butch's offense is what Debord is running and the passing game (routes, plays) aren't SEC level. We are running a guys offense who was never an OC. We need to also address theDB's, collectively the worst group I've ever seen in Orange. They aren't coached fundamentals at all. I mean at all.

Butch's offense struggles against good defensive opponents. Vandy, USC, (we sucked but had salty D's) and goes flat in the game. The offense is great to go 7-5, 8-4 and beat a potato from the big 10 in some lower tier bowl game every year. Not what I'm looking for as a fan.

Also the S&C program, this was what happened this year and shows what our HC knows about football at this level.

Lack of deep throws too many screens and short passes and lack of getting playmaker in space and predictable overall jmo

This year, Alabama has given up 11.1 ppg in 14 games. Starting with the Tennessee game this year, Alabama has given up 8.1 ppg in their last 8 games. In case you aren't aware, Alabama has a pretty good defense.

Edit: Florida gave up an average of 17.1 ppg this year, and 13.5 ppg the year before.

I'm not interested in seeing a play caller that wants to play even faster than we do now. The SEC is a long grind and I'd prefer to keep our D off the field as much as possible.

He waisted most of the year on Hurd instead of playing the better backs. It was clear that we had two backs on our team that were better than hurd. He is super predictable. Too many screens to the receivers. Any coordinator could put up decent numbers with the playmakers that we had.

Kind of tired of everyone slobbing on Alabama's knob. We get it, they're really good

We were destined to lose at least 2 games this year maybe 3, even if we played our best. Two big losses to Alabama, and probably another loss to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

I heard from somewhere we script our plays for 1st and 2nd down and then have options for 3rd down depending on how the 1st two went. The problem I have with that is our 2nd down play should be flexible due to how the 1st one turned out.

I would prefer to never hear "behind the chains" by Butch again.

Predictable conservative play calls early were putting us in a hole for so many games.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols 2017!

I think the feeling is DeBord is retiring or wants a lesser role in the program. But as someone mentioned before be careful about wanting DeBord gone, he has often been the voice of reason with Butch and kept him somewhat grounded. I think a new AD is going to do wonders for his PR anyways.

I have no idea where you heard that but let me just go ahead and debunk that one now.
