I have now rewatched what should have been the final play of the LSU game like it is the freaking Zapruder film and I am on the Warren comission. Who is the man on the sideline waving the players back on when they are trying to get off?
I have now rewatched this over and over and over.
27 seconds left, Malik Jackson, number 97 has just helped stop LSU's QB on a sprint right play. He gets up off the ground.
14 seconds left, 80, 2 and 10 come on for LSU.
12 seconds left Malik Jackson is motioning "get up" as players do at home before critical stops. We are on the road and not at home, but the big man has been playing very well and if it motivates him I am happy for him. He sees the other players coming on.
76, 88 and 35 immediately sprint off for LSU AND seeing that there is a sub, Malik waves over the guys who are supposed to come off with him in his 3 man group for the perssonel change.
If you are watching at home this is with 11 seconds left.
11 seconds left, Marsalis Teague 10, Malik Jackson 97 and Austin Johnson 40, all begin to run to the sideline.
We see a tall and lanky black player running into the screen. He is a blur even on my DVR moving forward one frame at a time so I am not sure which player it is because I cannot read his number.
At this point 10 seconds we are treated to a sideline shot of Derek Dooley and at 8 seconds we see the villain in our story. He has been protected by Dooley in that none of this was pointed out on the coaches show and he has not yet hit the sports talk radio either...
There is a UT coach who is clearly seen behind Dooley motioning for the players who are trying to come off to get back on the field. He is wearing a headset, and a black UT shirt and khakis and has no facial hair and a white hat on. It is not Peter Sirmon who was in the box, and it is not Lance Thompson.
Now only Les Miles is idiotic enough to substitute with that little time left. His own players include the center who snapped the ball without hearing from his QB because he said he did not want to repeat the debacle of last year against Ole Miss where time expired without running a play. His own players also include the guy throwing his helmet after he thinks the play is over because he is so mad at the coaches.
While Les Miles is an idiot who smells of corn dogs, idiotic responses are not something I expect from our coaching staff. Sometimes a great major league hitter will struggle if someone unexpectedly throws a ball 60 miles an hour, but more often they will CRUSH the ball even though it is impossibly slow for their league. I think whoever responded to Les Miles idiocy with their own idiocy should be given an opportunity to grow from it, BUT I want to know who it is.
6 seconds left, it is fairly clear that the blur from previously is actually Prentiss Waggner (the guy who missed the tackle that led to LSU's first seven). He is lined up now across from the new WR who LSU brought in (remember however that LSU still has in the worst throwing QB in recent SEC history).
At 6 seconds you can also clearly see Teague and Malik Jackson lining up again. with Teague still look and pointing at the sidelines. Several other UT players including it looks like a corner and a linebacker are looking at the sidelines and are unable to figure out what is happening.
The ref is NOT doing his job and is already off the ball. Unless you think that literally 2 seconds is enough to meet the spirit of the NCAA rule (seconds 10-8) then Dooley and Holtz are correct, because the ref is off with the ball set for the offense at 7 seconds...That same ref is staring at Malik and Teague as he backs off the ball and they wander back into screen.
The defense goes into their stance to get set with 5 seconds left. The ball is snapped. If it had been a good snap, and if Malik and Teague stayed off so the only sub was Austin Johnson out and Prentiss Waggner on, the field would have been fairly open for a sprint right (the play run previously by LSU) and the option pitch to #34 the RB lined up behind their running back who lined up to the right would have been available as well.
I would rather be angry that Wilcox had a terrible scheme in place when we lost on a big QB diving and breaking a tackle or a perfect pitch to an RB who got the corner than what happened. It is also VERY possible that the panicked LSU center snaps the ball over the QBs head and we have only 11 on the field and this becomes a historic victory we can all celebrate.
The person who is responsible for this is the person who told Teague and Jackson to get back on the field. You can see at least one of the defensive staff members motioning this on the record between 9 and 8 seconds on the sideline shot. Dooley is also NOT motioning them to get back on the field.
I am not certain at this point it is Wilcox, but I know it is not Terry Joseph, Chuck Smith, Peter Sirmon (who I loudly and wrongly accused as I watched last night because I did not know he was in the box). It was a white defensive coach standing behind Dooley without facial hair wearing a headset...the list of guys that description fits is pretty small.
The only great thing about this is that Justin Wilcox is a man who is very young, still single, and VERY accomplished. His Boise State team that had a lot of guys who had learned his system were able to shut down an Oregon team with a ton more talent on paper. I started a thread before he was hired begging for us to get Justin Wilcox as our DC. This can be a stinging lesson in humility and not taking the basics for granted for a young guy who has lots of reasons to be cocky. If we are able to show him some grace, and support him here in Knoxville, I believe we will see that he is a very special coaching talent. He knew Boise State would have a great chance at a HUGE season this year, but he choose to come to Tennessee, to build up a thin and broken program and get it back to where it needs to be.
Some men stop drinking after a DUI and their life is much better for it.
You do not get much more humbled than as a coach directly costing your team the game in all likelihood on national television. He is young and brilliant and gifted and I hope that this is a learning lesson for the rest of his life. If someone else can point out to me that there is another white coach without facial hair wearing a headset who was in fact responsible I will say I am sorry to Wilcox.
Would be interesting to hear Malik Jackson and Marsalis Teague interviewed...
