So who is black 33? Black 33 is walk-on kicker Devin Mathis. Mathis was a all-state soccer player from Chattanooga Baylor. Mathis is a sophomore in college and a former high school teammate of offensive lineman Jacques McClendon.
Mathis was supposed to be out for spring practice, but could not kick because he tore his ACL in an intramural soccer game last fall when he was not on the team. He got the knee fixed and rehabbed on his own and came out a couple of weeks ago to start kicking. On Wednesday, Mathis kicked it well during the part of practice that the media was allowed to watch.
"He is getting back into it right now," head coach Phillip Fulmer said. "We are working to get him back into it right now. He was very inconsistent the last couple of days, but he has not been kicking a whole lot. Anyone is a possibility for Saturday. He has been released from the doctor since last Monday so he is available. I hope he continues to improve."
Fulmer said Mathis was not kicking off from the 30, but his kicks clearly had more height and distance that the kicks from Chad Cunningham and Daniel Lincoln. He clearly is a guy we will keep an eye on.
