As a long time Memphis resident...the real problem is with our criminal justice system. The police here do a pretty decent job of arresting criminals, but judges give them low bails and our DA's office overall doesn't do the best job prosecuting. Criminals have a revolving door. There are some issues with organized crime as well.
1. All politicians say that they will be tough on crime. If you know of an example of a politician running on, "I am indifferent to criminal activity, as long as it stays away from my neighborhood," I would like to know who it was. That's a level of honesty, I'm not used to hearing from politicians.1.Voting for a politician that is tough on crime. 2. Snitching on the criminals.
2. Neighborhood watch programs

2. For it to have any impact, the snitching can't stay anonymous, with nothing more than a phone call to the police. The snitches will have to be willing to cooperate with the DA's office all the way through the prosecutions, and perhaps even be needed to testify in court. That sounds easy, unless the accused criminal is a gang member .... If that's the case, I sure hope the snitches enjoy life in the witness protection program, because that's the only way they will survive the process. Gangs tend to be very effective at intimidating the law abiding people of their communities into staying quiet.
3. In the most dangerous places in Memphis, that is asking people with no law enforcement training to put their lives on the line without any financial compensation for the risk they are taking .... to square off against drug dealing gang bangers who will always be packing firearms. In west Knoxville, neighborhood watches are a good idea. In north Memphis, they are not practical.
That's where their focus already is. This deployment is a hollow show of force. Now, even just a hollow show of force can have a positive effect .... but it's not sustainable, and it won't serve as a deterrent beyond the time the National Guard occupation has ended. That's what I posted in numerous posts in this thread. They will patrol the lower crime tourist areas that will free up local LEO and State/Feds to focus on the high crime/problem areas the way they did in DC.
That's where the LEOs & Federal Agencies have to do work. You act like it's all on the NG.That's where their focus already is. This deployment is a hollow show of force. How's that anti-crime National Guard deployment in DC working out?
DC National Guard deployment to cost $200 million, as soldiers pick up trash, blow leaves
The 958 members of the DC National Guard currently deployed have been joined by more than 1,340 sent from eight Republican-run states, including West Virginia, South Carolina and Mississippi, according to a Sept. 16 daily update sent out by the National Guard.
Those troops have "cleared 1,015 bags of trash, spread 744 cubic yards of mulch, removed five truckloads of plant waste, cleared 6.7 miles of roadway, and painted 270 feet of fencing," according to the update.

Having lived in Shelby County since 1977, I can assure you they won’t. When the NG leaves, it will go back to business as usual. There might be a “reprieve” in some areas but the gangs and thugs will just go where the Guard ain’t. (Just like they generally go where the cops aren’t.) I’m guessing there will be heavy presence downtown but not so much in Frayser, Whitehaven, Orange Mound and Hickory Hill where most of the real activity occurs. You're like a child throwing a tantrum because you're not getting your way. Does the lady living on the street with weekly shootings care it is temporary? No. She's grateful for the reprieve. When the deterrent is removed, the leaders who have failed their constituency will have a decision to make. Let's hope they make the right ones.
It's a shame the citizens of Shelby Co have given up. I guess the rest of us will just continue to drive through it on the interstate.Having lived in Shelby County since 1977, I can assure you they won’t. I know y’all don’t want to hear it but Monty is correct. This is a temporary dog and pony show and just another of Trump’s bright shiny objects to distract his base. Everybody should be used to it by now.
It’s actually pretty good out in Germantown and Collierville. Nice places to live. The governments and police there are competent. (Personally I try my best not to go west of Germantown Road.)It's a shame the citizens of Shelby Co have given up. I guess the rest of us will just continue to drive through it on the interstate.
Good luck to yall down there.
