Who ya got in the draft lottery?

“Rubio doesn’t want to go to Memphis, and he especially does not want to pay money out of his own pocket with that huge buyout for the honor of doing so. Fegan [Rubio’s agent] wants him in L.A., and if he can’t have him there, he wants him in Sacramento. Definitely not Oklahoma City. “

Unlike Griffin or Hasheem Thabeet, who don’t really have any choice where they will play next season if a team decides to play hardball, Rubio has a reasonably attractive alternative option at his disposal—returning to Spain.

“He’ll pull out if he doesn’t like what he’s hearing,” the NBA source tells us. “Or he can stay in and force the Grizzlies to call his bluff—would they really take him knowing that he may never come over? That’s one way to get him to fall to three.”

From DraftExpress.

The league needs to put a stop to this nonsense. There should be a rule that if a team drafts you and you hold them hostage by threatening to play in another country than you will have to serve a one year suspension when you decide to return to the NBA if you do play in other country.

Also, when they return they must enter the draft again instead of letting them sign on as a free agent where they choose.

How is Rubio "threatening" anything? He's under contract for next season in Spain. Anyone who drafts him knows that. He has options. Thus, he's not a slave to the NBA system. More guys should find ways to stick it to Stern and Co.

I didn't realize he was under contract. I thought this was a case of a guy that wanted to enter the draft but determine what teams can and cannot draft him. In that case I wouldn't draft him in the risk that he does not play for my team if I owned the Grizzlies. I guess their best option is to look for a trade out of that pick. This isn't a good year to have a #2 pick in the draft.

I have heard Rubio has an eight million dollar buyout on his Spanish team. That's a lot of dough before he even gets on the hardwood. Speaking of hardwood, if any other teams have a hardon for Rubio haven't you guys ever heard of drafting and trading a player?

I would hope they get somebody worthwhile if they went that route. I think I read (so don't hold me to it) that Rubio only makes around $1 million over in Spain. If he turns out to be a top 10 PG in the league, he could increase that amount 10 times.

I missed the draft lottery while I was overseas. I'm sure this has been said before, but you've got to love how they finally give the grizz a top 3 pick when the draft class is just god awful
