If you listen to the VQ interview, JA has been the unrecruited underdog at every stop. Went to JUCO...beat out the starter and excelled. Went to App st...beat out the starter and set the records for yardage and TDs in a season all time. He has won the starting job at every stop.
If you have watched his film, he looks good. He doesn't have the raw talent of Hooker or Lagway etc...but he makes quick decisions and throws a good ball where the WRs can make a play. He throws a good deep ball...which we missed the last 2 years. Yes, he threw too many INTs last year but he had terrible WRs and his team was overmatched underdogs in most games. His line wasn't very good at all either. He made a lot of plays with his legs and his arm.
Jake Merklinger was an Elite 11 QB and highly rated out of HS. Mid to high 4* guy that could have gone to other bigtime programs. He is very talented and has a full year learning the system already. Jake has a good arm and is also mobile and a good athlete. He is also a 19yo guy thats about 4 years younger than JA and has never started a college game. This competition is gonna be great for BOTH QBs and whichever guy starts game 1 will have earned it. Both guys need to be ready to run this offense every week because this is the SEC. We may need both of them this season. May the best man win.
