Who will/should redshirt in 2015?

Agree! With RB depth so low, I don't think they can afford to do this. Depending on the RB health situation, Perry might be called into service though I'm sure they would redshirt him if he's not needed.

No I think Kelly could RS and if injuries call him in it gets burned. Just a precaution

My question is which QB will be 2nd string? Now obviously Dormady is sitting pretty at the #2 spot, but I wonder who will actually go in when we're up big against BG in game 1.

I'd bet they play Jennings in that situation. I think you'll only see Dormady if it's a close game and Dobbs goes down. Seems like Dormady could be very good and I think the coaches would like to RS him if possible. Jmo.

A little off topic, but whatever became of the rumors about Paulk possibly rejoining the team?

IMO if he enrolls in summer classes he will be back with the team. He could easily get a scholarship somewhere else.

You don't redshirt the candidate you trust playing if things go wrong... You get them reps. You also don't waste a player's eligibility when he's NOT developed in order to save a preferred player's eligibility. Besides being just wrong, it's a dangerous parlor game. If Jennings is better and more ready? Play him then.

My hope is that the following will redshirt:

QB- Jancek, Jennings & Jones
RB- Bruce
WR- Perry (saw some on VN listing him as RB but I thought he was gonna be a WR here)
TE- Oliver & Eli Wolf
G- Boulware, Hall
DE- Taylor
DT- Picou
LB- Smith, Ja. Johnson, Sapp
DB- Griffin

Well I def don't think Jennings is the better QB, but that's strictly based off of one spring game. I do think Jennings is probably at the bottom though when you compare him to Dobbs, Dormady, Sherion Jones, and now Jarrett Gaurtksnakdofbfkao. I'd suggest putting him into a game like BG when we're up big to see how he manages the offense. Dormady showed great leadership in running the O, so I don't think that's at question.

I see positives and negatives to playing either QB, which is why I asked who would actually play behind Dobbs. The Jarret kid from New Jersey looks like a program changer, and I think he's ultimately the next BIG QB after Dobbs. But Dormady did look good. It's a good problem to have.

That'd be some good depth building right there

Butchna, I can't believe I'm saying this, but by golly I agree with you.

Guarantano might have to wait his turn behind Dormady but he looks impressive on film. Guarantano could very well be the future.

Honestly, he seems like the kid that we always miss out on who ends up going to Ohio State and wins a heisman. He's that good.

Honestly, as much as I can't wait to see Preston Williams play, I wouldn't hate to see him redshirt to recover 100% from that acl unless he really comes in and rehabs like a beast.

Also on my list of potential redshirt candidates would be:

Jauan Jennings
Chance Hall
Andrew Butcher
Quay Picou
Zach Stewart
Darrell Taylor
Darrell Miller

Your predictions?

I just don't see Butcher being a RS. Hard to keep those workout warrior gym rats with a high motor off the field.

I'm not sure I see Taylor redshirting. He is a going to be very good. I think he'll see the field more and more as the season goes on. Especially in pass rush situations.

Last year- Raulerson, Creamer, Bryant, Blair, Bates (injury), JSmith (injury), Blanc (injury) and Mosley (injury) were the only RS. 4 RS due to injury, 4 normal. Entirely possible we could have a few unexpected ones due to injury, but since our depth in certain spots is getting better, I'd say the planned ones maybe goes up to 7 or 8.

I'll say-
VBoulware
ZStewart
VPerry
JYoung
KOliver
DTaylor
QSapp
ASmith

It's hard to stay injury free for a whole year as an SEC RB. I think Kelly will see some time and hopefully be used quite a bit in mop-up duty, if ya get my drift..

We're still thin on the offensive line, so we're probably gonna need this guy. He's performed well so far in the spring and is a big dude.

How has this staff operated in the past concerning redshirts? Do they let the season play out and label the non-participants as redshirts, or do they pre-determine the redshirts before the season begins?

They tell most players up front if they're considering the possibility of a redshirt. It's kind of a balancing act: they want the players to stay mentally ready to go if needed, but also not to get antsy if they're not seeing play time after several games. So they try to let them know without getting the players off point.

At the same time, everyone involved knows that redshirts aren't decided until the season ends, and everything depends on health and performance. Sometimes "next man up" is called, even late in the season.

I could see up to 24 red shirts this year, 22 freshmen and maybe 2 sophomores:
  • Vincent Perry and Preston Williams at WR
  • Will Jumper & Eli Wolf at TE
  • Riley Lovingood at LongSnapper
  • Laszlo Toser at Kicker
  • Joe Young at RB ... and maybe John Kelly as well, if Hurd & Kamara stay healthy and RDA IV is the #3
  • Sheriron Jones at QB
  • Drew Richmond and Vinzell Boulware at OL
  • Quart'e Sapp, Landon Knoll, Austin Smith, and DaJour Maddox at LB
  • Quay Picou at DT
  • Andrew Butcher and Darrell Taylor at DE
  • Stephen Griffin, MaLeik Gatewood, Darrell Miller, and maybe Micah Abernathy at DB
Sophomores:
  • Rashaan Gaulden, of course (medical RS)
  • Will Martinez at WR
