I think Mayo has a shot, and I'd say Hefney, but idn if you could consider a FS a field general. If so, than put Hefney on there too. Ainge isn't tough enough to be regarded in the same sentence as Manning or Wilson, but he will be very very good this year.
To me, a field general doesnt come from a specific position...its a player who leads the other players off the field, by making plays physically and by reading and understanding the game mentally...Ryan Karl, Jerod Mayo and Hefney would be my choices on defense...Ainge is really the only player on offense, at this point, who already has the ability the step on the field and be a field general...just my :twocents:
Asking who will be this year's Al Wilson is like asking who will be this year's Bruce Springsteen. They are once in a lifetime individuals. The answer is there won't be one.
I agree there will not be another Wilson. What the team needs is another Kevin Burnett. Burnett was the heart and soul of the team in '04. His love for the program and the younger guys molded that '04 team to the SEC title game. In '05 after he was gone no leadership and every knows what happened.
I think Ainge will be there on offense. Now on defense I'm thinking of a combo of Karl/Mayo. But I wouldn't be surprised if Mapu steps up and is a leader.....he has a lot of maturity, you never know.:twocents:
I don't know... Kevin Burnett was great, but the 2005 defense was better than the 2004 defense. The team had three senior linebackers, four senior linemen, and Jason Allen at safety.
In 2004, I really thought the offense carried the defense.
Agreed.
It's too bad Simon didn't turn out to be the all-american everyone thought he would be. Sure he was solid, but by no means was he an Al Wilson or Raynoch Thompson (or even a Kevin Burnett for that matter). It's too bad the 04 team didn't have a more experienced secondary or that defense would've been stacked.
Simon had about 5 billion injuries. He lost an awful lot of speed. He played a little in 2002 before getting injured. After that little stint, I really thought he was going to be special. I think he just had a few too many injuries, much like Jayson Swain.
Then again, Al Wilson had quite a few injuries... but he defidently lost speed. He almost made up for it with strength and Chavis was quoted as saying he was "more explosive than ever" in 05, but his injuries hampered his ability to max out his potential.
