Who will be this year's Al Wilson/Peyton Manning?

Who will be the field generals?

I think Mayo has a shot, and I'd say Hefney, but idn if you could consider a FS a field general. If so, than put Hefney on there too. Ainge isn't tough enough to be regarded in the same sentence as Manning or Wilson, but he will be very very good this year.

As far as field generals go Ryan Karl directed the defense last year, as he knew the defense and reads better than anyone out there. But our best defensive players will likely be Mayo and Hefney.

running the ball well will be the key to success early in the year, so i hope one of the backs steps up into the field general role on offense.

Asking who will be this year's Al Wilson is like asking who will be this year's Bruce Springsteen. They are once in a lifetime individuals. The answer is there won't be one.

he asked two different questions. You are right, there won't be another Al Wilson.

To me, a field general doesnt come from a specific position...its a player who leads the other players off the field, by making plays physically and by reading and understanding the game mentally...Ryan Karl, Jerod Mayo and Hefney would be my choices on defense...Ainge is really the only player on offense, at this point, who already has the ability the step on the field and be a field general...just my :twocents:

Very true.

The "field general" must also be able to get up in someones ass when thier head isn't in the game. I don't know how many times I saw Al Wilson getting up in peoples face in 98.

Physically, Wilson just looked like one of them cats you don't mess with at all. I saw him at a Tennessee basketball game in 97 he was decked out in a black leather jacket and just had this perma-pissed off look on his face.

To this day I have a big man crush on Al Wilson. I've said it time and time before.

Ya there will never be another Al Wilson. I think this years field generals should be Ainge and Hefney.

I agree, Volnation may never see leaders with the qualities that Manning and Wilson have. I too think that Al Wilson was a once in a lifetime player, I've never seen a defensive performance like the 1997 Florida game!
That being said I think Mayo could be a huge factor this season, and I'm hopeful that some of the incoming freshman (Berry, Donald, Martin, Jones) have some of these qualities because I think this is what has kept us from being competitive as much as anything over the time since our last SEC Championship.

That may be true but UT does or rather did have a headhunter reputation once upon a time.

I agree there will not be another Wilson. What the team needs is another Kevin Burnett. Burnett was the heart and soul of the team in '04. His love for the program and the younger guys molded that '04 team to the SEC title game. In '05 after he was gone no leadership and every knows what happened.

I think Ainge will be there on offense. Now on defense I'm thinking of a combo of Karl/Mayo. But I wouldn't be surprised if Mapu steps up and is a leader.....he has a lot of maturity, you never know.:twocents:

I don't know... Kevin Burnett was great, but the 2005 defense was better than the 2004 defense. The team had three senior linebackers, four senior linemen, and Jason Allen at safety.

In 2004, I really thought the offense carried the defense.

Agreed.

It's too bad Simon didn't turn out to be the all-american everyone thought he would be. Sure he was solid, but by no means was he an Al Wilson or Raynoch Thompson (or even a Kevin Burnett for that matter). It's too bad the 04 team didn't have a more experienced secondary or that defense would've been stacked.

Simon had about 5 billion injuries. He lost an awful lot of speed. He played a little in 2002 before getting injured. After that little stint, I really thought he was going to be special. I think he just had a few too many injuries, much like Jayson Swain.

Then again, Al Wilson had quite a few injuries... but he defidently lost speed. He almost made up for it with strength and Chavis was quoted as saying he was "more explosive than ever" in 05, but his injuries hampered his ability to max out his potential.

Simon had more leg injuries than I can even recall. He hurt his leg (broken maybe?) in a high school all-star game, then he tore his ACL maybe in 2002, then again in 2004. I may be wrong about the nature of his injuries, but they were all somehow related to his leg. I'd say in 2005, he probably just wasn't able to go 100%, much like Edgerrin James after his injury with the Colts.

Al Wilson was the man. My favorite VOL. We could really use someone with that type of leadership again.

if you guys are talking fieldgenerals in the literal term then Ainge and Ryan Karl are because they are the ones who literally run through the checks and audibles at the line and receive the signals from the sidelines.
