Im assuming marlin lane will probably be our starting rb next year if for nothing more than having the most experience ( other than neal who seems to be a fumble prone tweener). My question is which rb will be considered the number 2 guy? Will it be neal? Tom smith? Toney? A freshman? Im thinking neal personally followed by smith. I think neal has a shot to start if he just fixes the fumbling. He offers tons of speed and versatility out of the backfield and should be a force on screens.

Not sure but between Neal, Smith, Borque, and Hill...my guess is Neal, Smith, and Hill will have a leg up with spring practice. Borque could redshirt maybe?

My guess (GUESS) is that Neal will play a lot of positions including running back. Young might also see some action there if he's healthy and solid. Others, including Borque will work into playing time early and either grow or watch later in the season.

Is that your final answer as to who will be our back up RB?

I think neal starts this year at rb with lane being number 2. With a rb coach neal could be really good 215lb 4.3 40 time. Tiki Barber had fumbling issues that can be fixed. Lane will be #2 also cause of sophmore slump

Raijon Neal is a wild card at the moment. If the staff commits him to RB, then I think he's #2. Otherwise, I'm going to guess Bourque wins the #2 spot by fall, with Marlin Lane as the #1.

I think Lane will start if he is fully recovered and past any mental block concerning his injury.

Neal could be a great 3rd down back in this offense. If he can pick up the blocking assignments and square away his funbling issues. Imagine Hunter, Rogers and CP at wideout with Neal running a wheel route out of the backfield on 3rd down. :loco:

Talk about a D coordinator's nightmare.....

Neal definitely #2 or even #1. This is the first year we have had a RB coach and from other player comments Graham is a great RB coach. It's a toss up as to who is #1 or #2 between Lane and Neal.

Heh ......first of all Toney has been gone over a year so I don't give him much chance of being # 2 .......IMO it will be Lane and Neal as 1 and 2 , with 1 being whichever wins the spot between now and the first game . I just don't know about Smith , it is do or die time for him . If he can't stay ahead of Hill and Borque , I would expecta a transfer for him
If Hill becomes the 3rd back I could see Borque being moved to olb That being said I expect Borque to win the 3rd spot by mid-season . Should be an interesting spring and fall camp

If you have not seen him play, get ready for Davante Bourque. I would not be surprised if the kids gets a lot of carries early. LSU will be kicking themselves over this guy for a while.

Jaron Toney, not Toney Williams. Get with the program.

Hopefully Borque will come in and have a M. Lattimore type Freshman season. Watching his film, he has all the ability in the world, not to mention his attitude. After reading the quote of how he plays, I am excited about this young man. It is great to have a RB that wants to be the one putting the hit on someone, instead of waiting to be hit or ducking the hit. Good old power running.

I would like to see Neal back at rb and for him and lane to really battle it out. Neal is such a diverse threat out of the backfield, I would love to see him take the starting job. Reminds me of a faster arian foster.

I think Neal and lane split touches early with one or the other claiming the starting job by the uga game. I also think q watson redshirt and either hill or borque could redshirt if smith makes strides.

I think Bourgue is the starter by the Florida game...

However, I do hope that Tom Smith has a great winter & spring and comes to play.

I am just not sure that Marlin is ever going to be able to overcome the mental aspect of overcoming a major knee reconstruction. But I am keeping my fingers crossed for him

I can't get past your assumption that Lane is the starter. I think the competition is wide open and won't be settled until the season starts. Even then, you won't see an every down back. As much as UT is going to throw it, ask yourself who is our best pass protection RB. That very well could be your starter.

I think this (along with whether the Vols move to a 3-4 and the corresponding position shuffling) is one of the more interesting pre-season questions for this year. My hope is that Lane and Neal form a potent one-two punch which would permit some depth building at RB by redshirting one or two of the freshmen. I would like this in large part because that would mean Patterson or Dallas has panned out as the third WR which would allow Neal to move back to RB. I think Tom Smith has a shot to play as well as Jaron Toney. Bourque and Hill are the wildcards. I don't think either of them will have a Lattimore type freshman year but I will certainly root for it. Since I don't typically place a lot of trust in freshmen football players, my guess is Lane and Neal as the first two and I think there will be a significant battle for the third spot between Smith, Toney, Bourque, and Hill.

Jaron Toney is a walkon that played last year. Maybe you are thinking about Toney Williams that left? Not sure of MY spelling, but think it is right. All confusing for sure.

Most impotant name to remember is Coach Jay Graham!

Neal showed some promise (minus being fumble prone) as a freshman, i would be really disappointed if we don't move him back to RB, especially considering we don't need him as a WR.
