Who thinks Fulmer firing was a mistake?

ok, so you are comparing TX & AL home-state recruiting to TN homestate recruiting?

Are u serious?

UT Knox does not have the luxury of pulling talent from our homestate to fill in the team. Not saying that TX & AL don't pull great recruits from all over but it's easier to pull those top recruits when you aren't chasing 15-20 3 star playeres all over the country. More time can be spent going after the big guns

Hmmm, markb does bring up some valid points. Fulmer couldn't coach worth a lick, but we can't deny that he could recruit. The problem was what he did after they came here. That is my answer to your question. 5-star recruits are worth nothing until they're taught and used correctly. The games aren't played using high school stats. If we make a good hire, the next coach should be able to utilize talent better. I would take well-coached and well-disciplined 4-star recruits over badly utilized and undisciplined 5-star recruits anyday.

Also, I hardly believe Fulmer is the only man who could ever convince quality recruits to come to UT.

Way to deflect. I responded to your comment about the lovely setting of other successful schools. But since you ask, both TX and AL have great recruits but also compete heavily for those recruits from instate and out of state schools. There was a lengthy discussion the other day about all the TN instate talent that has chosen to go elsewhere. You can probably do a search for it. Perhaps putting a fence around the state of TN might be a good start.

You forgot to say anything about OK

1. Fulmer.

2. Fulmer's wife.

3. Fulmer's agent.

4. Fulmer's dry cleaner.

5. Fulmer's accountant.

Just trying to be fair. He had them in the conference championship game a year ago.

I just think this situation is very similar to Joe Pa's. Joe Pa was allowed to stay. It worked out well for Penn State, wouldn't you say?

Nothing remotely close to Joe Pa's situation. Penn St had several losing seasons in a row. Plus Joe Pa is over 20 years older than Fulmer.

Your argument is weak comparing UT to PSU. Paterno IS Penn State and built it up which is the only reason they didn't fire him earlier this decade. Just because Paterno is HC of a team that has turned things around in no way means that Fulmer will be able to do the exact same thing. Different coaches, different circumstances.

Wrong

I don't know how many years ago it was...I think sometime in the early to mid-nineties, but the University gave Paterno tenure, which means he literally can't be fired just because he has a losing season or ten straight losing seasons. The skuttlebutt out of State College was it was the worst mistake they had ever made, because Paterno was simply too stubborn to quit or retire.
