Who thinks Fulmer firing was a mistake?

Well Fulmer is now gone and I feel like crap. I do believe it was time for him to go, but wow I feel bad about this.

I guess in a nutshell, this whole thing is just a shame. The press conference today was probally the hardest thing I have ever watched as a Tennessee fan. I couldn't help but think "What have we done?"

Phil Fulmer IS Tennessee football, and he is also a fine person. He defines the phrase "blood run'th orange".

Look, when it comes down to it, Fulmer changed the lives of so many people. I KNOW I would trust Phil with my son for 4 years. It's shame that this PURE game is based ONLY on your record. Thats just my two cents.

After all, it's just a game college kids play....

God I hope we didn't screw up....

GO VOLS!!!

Not entirely true. His teams have recorded double digit victories 5 times the last 10 seasons heading into this year. That includes 13 wins in 1998 and 11 wins in 2001. He also won the east 5 times in a 10 year span, dating back 10 years from 2007. Those are the facts, men.

So he had the best conference record of six teams (three of which are Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and South Carolina) that didn't play the same conference foes. Who cares?

The loss to LSU in the 2001 SECCG, after that ridiculous post-Florida celebration, was the beginning of the end.

1992-2001: 95-20, .826

2002-2008: 55-31, .639

The mistake was not in presenting CPF with the proverbial "resign or be fired" ultimatum, but each and every raise and extension since 2005, after which a SEC title should have been a prequisite for a raise and extension. Many of us have seen this day coming since at least 2005, and Hamilton's lack of foresight has left Haslam, et al with a $6 million butcher's biill to pay.

As tough as the presser was to watch, it was hard to be wholly sympathetic for a man who let his pride and stubbornness delay what was best for ther University that he professes so much love for.

We may have to go through a Zook before we get a Meyer, but in the long run we'll be better off for this.

So,hiring Clawson was a mistake and it showed on the field. It seems to me that if Cut was still here,we would be having a decent season. Was it a mistake in firing Phil?In some ways I say yes because he was successful as long as he had a good OC.

....with David Cutcliffe as his offensive coordinator, Fulmer’s teams were 85-19. Without Cutcliffe Fulmer’s Tennessee teams were 65-32.

What was a mistake was we given him an extension not to long ago. That's why we should never have given him that extension.

Why?

We know he ain't leaving.

On CSS today after Phil’s press conference Tee was talking and I think he made a good comment and point. I will try and paraphrase what he said.. He stated that he thinks Tennessee jumped the gun too quickly on asking Fulmer to step down. He said Fulmer took his team to the SECCG and was one interception return away from winning that game. He states, yes they've had a horrible year but as of yesterday on Rivals.com Tennessee had the #5 recruiting class. He said, there were signs of a change and signs of a turn around. Now that Fulmer will not return, he said a lot of those recruits will highly rethink their commitment to Tennessee. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

I just hope this doesn’t turn out to be a huge mistake. Yes, I agree it was past time for this, but it should have been done after the 2005 season when Tennessee had all those players getting in trouble, and we ended up with a losing record. It should have happened then.<o:p></o:p>

getting rid of Fulmer will ruin UT football.

Mike Hamilton is an idiot. Hamilton obviously believes that he can bring in a better recruiting person than Fulmer. Why does he think so? because Hamilton thinks that UT's fine academia and culture is why the recruits have been coming there. No Mr. Hamilton, your school does NOT have anything to offer a 5 star recruit other than Fulmer and his ability to move players into the NFL.

UT has what about 25K /year scholarship to offer? and no beaches... no girls in bikinis. No fun in the sun... Hell, most recruits have never even heard of Knoxville TN and really don't care about the darn smokey mountains or coonskin hats

Only P. Manning will be able to recruit like Fulmer did but by the time he is ready to come home to TN, there will be such a mess that Manning might not want to clean it up.

Sorry you have such a low opinion of the university.

I love the University and I believe that my opinion is a realistic one. UT Players come here to play in the Sec & Go Pro not for the culture or academics.

Please tell me what I am missing here.. What does the university of TN have to offer a 5 star recruit? other than this?

There are a lot of people who do not agree with me but no one is offering support in regards to their beliefs. Please chime in because I want to be wrong about losing Fulmer. The last thing that I want is a non-competitive team and unhappy players and students.

So did you enjoy 2005 under Phillip?

I agree. There is nothing I enjoy more than lazing on the beaches watching the girls in Tuscaloosa, or Austin, or Norman, etc, etc,.

I will miss Phil, but it was time for him to go. I wish he would have stepped down at the end of last season and went out on a high note. But, things happen for a reason and I am sure Phil will find success in whatever he pursues.
