Who starts Saturday against S. Carolina?

JG should without a doubt. I would rather grow up through a struggling year with him for the future then watch Dormady keep throwing into triple coverage after never looking off his primary receiver from his back foot over and over... so frustrating.

I hate to say it but I don't think it matters much. Butch has ran off better players than he has developed and the system doesn't work unless you have an extremely athletic qb to bail it out.

After watching no nuts for 5 years no doubt it will be QD. Butch can't pull the trigger.

A couple years ago JG was one of the highest recruited DT/QB in the nation........he is a true DT........running QB.

Your quote: "From what I have seen JG is not a runner except when he has too"

That is exactly what I am talking about. To me it looks like JG has not been given the OK to just take off. Good DT's (when young) thrive because there is always the threat of them just taking off. If you take that threat away, and they are not developed enough (in their passing, their reads, their protection, and with the O scheme) there is no reason to even put them on the field.

Yes, he was considered DT and he does have very good athleticism. But, he played HS in a system where he was more of a pocket passer and a runner only when scrambling out of pressure. He did not play in a QB designed run plays as a key to success.

Not saying he can't be a runner. Just saying his experience so far is more being a pocket based passing QB.

Doesn't matter either way. Larry Scott is garbage and the system is inherently flawed. Load the box to stop the run. QBs never keep, so the rpo is busted. Our WRs can't get separation. I'll be surprised if we manage 200 total yards. I'm thinking South Carolina 31-10.

Most likely Quinten Dormady. Let be real here.

Jones already laying that ground work when he said they don’t have enough time to change much. AKA “Jarret ain’t starting”.

You can see that one coming a mile away.

Agree

Point taken, but

As a starter, JG rushed for about 20% of his total yards (also many of his yards were lost via sacks). He has proven athletic talent (or he would never have been #1 DT) and can run.

When JG is on the field everyone will be ready to stop the RB. As they do not respect his passing game yet, and they do not respect that he will take off (frankly everyone has been doing that because QD does not fit the system)
In Tennessee's system you have to have a QB that can run the ball. In a read option system if there is not the threat of the QB taking off then you lose 1/3rd of the threat from the get go............and if the QB has not developed their passing game.........you lose almost everything.

All I am saying is if Tennessee lets him do whatever he needs to (take off when he wants or needs to) the offense can still work, and he will learn everything else as he goes (the reads, the protections, ect). If JG does not do this..........the O will not get any better (unless they changed schemes totally).

JG will start, and unless he gets hurt he will prob be the starter for the season.

Just my thoughts, but Butch knows things are extremely hot. JG has the most upside, and is the only one of the two who can really run the current O. JG certainly has not looked good; however he is more athletic, can run and survive better, and maybe can become more of a "don't lose the game" QB, until he develops more.

Also when he has been out there it seems like JG hasn't been turned loose. When you have an undeveloped DT/QB he needs to have permission to just take off; later in development he can hang in the pocket.

Totally agree!

Because it's stupid to play a true freshman. We'd have a potential Dobbs situation all over again.

JG is currently 12-24 for a whopping 54 yds. He has 10 carries for 6 yards. And some of you want to start him. Smh

I get what you're saying, but I think you're confusing an RPO with the read option
