Who Should Get A Statue?

Nathan W. Dougherty and Robert R. Neyland. They are the only two who deserve such a permanent memorial.

Dougherty built Tennessee Athletics. He should be the first to get a statue

Nathan Dougherty, considered by many to be the founding father of UT Athletics. Nathan Dougherty, an associate professor of Civil Engineering, was named interim chairman of the University's Athletics Council in 1917 and held this "temporary" position for the next 39 years. During this time, he designed Shields-Watkins Field, helped create the Southeastern Conference, and hired a football coach whose own name would become synonymous with UT football--Robert Reese Neyland.

To me the 4 defining people to Tennessee Football at this current moment that deserve a statue are....

Rod Wilks
Freak
Eric Berry
Gen. Neyland.

^ Thats just what I think of when I get on Volnation and ponder who are the 4 most defining people to me from this program.....Rod Wilks name is in every thread. Eric Berry Is the leader/captain/freak athlete of this team/Freak makes this all possible, and allows us all to converge and vomit our knowledge of recruiting, politics, media coverage, etc. with each other, and Neyland started off our program to be conisistantly in the top 15 programs nationally.

Someone said Donte Stallworth and Travis Henry. Yikes. Stallworth who killed someone while drinking and driving. Travis Henry who dealt massive amounts of cocaine and has 11 kids with 10 different women. They were awesome players but putting up statues of them is beyond ridiculous. Does USC have a statue of OJ Simpson? I guess I wouldn't put it past them. But, if they don't already I would hope they wouldn't put one up. If they already have one up, I would hope they took it down. Brutally murdering people is far worse than what Stallworth and Henry did but OJ Simpson also accomplished a lot more than this two. And too be fair, he was acquitted. I don't agree with it and think he was guilty but his conviction is in between Henry and Stallworths convictions. In other words, if USC isn't putting up a statue of OJ... no way should Tennessee put up a statue of those two. Jamaal Lewis shouldn't get a statue either after getting busted with 5 kilos of coke. Sorry to be so harsh on some of the former Tennessee greats but blatantly ignoring their off the field problems and praising them doesn't seem right to me. Your child asks who the statue is on the way into Neyland and what's your response going to be? "Son, that coke head was one of the best running backs Tennessee has ever seen!" :p

The sad thing is.... if they had up statues of both Henry and Lewis your son could ask "Which one?"

They are already putting one up for Coach Neyland and it should be in place for 2010 season. It was in an article the other day about the renovations going on at the stadium.

Poor Donte. If he had not been drinking he would not have been charged. An idiot jumped in front of his Bentley to get paid and he ended up dying instead of just getting hurt. Donte's drinking was not a but for cause of that guys death. It is very regrettable but not his fault.

given the reality of what can happen in someone's life even after retirement (OJ) should the person have to be dead before we put one up or change the name of a street?

IMO, there should be only one full body statue at Neyland Stadium and it should be the General and maybe Smokey somewhere near the inside of gate 21. I'm all for having busts of Fulmer, Majors, and Ward at various gates with a plaque listing info/achievements, but no one besides Neyland needs a statue.

I'm thinking a Mt. Rushmore style carving on the river wall across the bridge:

Johnnie Jones
Al Wilson
Tony White
Dyron Nix - the kudzu could be styled like Jheri-Curl
