Who is Tony Basillio by the way? Is this an east Tennessee name?

Tony is a good hearted Christian who loves and supports East TN and his alma mater. Tony is passionate about the Vols and is a hard worker, but never takes himself too seriously. His Fifth Quarter shows after football games are legendary and often last into the wee hours of the morning. His daily blog is informative, often thought provoking, and an overall great read. His volunteering and philantropic efforts and support for the local community are both genuine and borderline heroic. He's the dean of sports radio and his longevity and success speaks for itself (23 years and going strong). He's good people...

The OP regularly starts threads that make it seem as if he ate paint and then decided to share a thought. Forgive people if they are a little irritable with him.

What I don't understand is why so many are actually answering the OP's question. Like he's ever coming back to this thread. Come on now.

You'll be hard pressed to find a better human than Tony Basilio. He actually has some pretty good sources, just check the things that he's reported during the AD search and even reporting that Dave Hart was stepping down before anyone else had.

Thanks. So basically on his website he provides the Cliff Notes from VN and other boards, adds his, or his contributors', spin. For some who live out of state/country and can't spend hours culling, he provides a service.

No doubt about that. He has a passionate fan base that has followed him from stop to stop.

Amen. Recently had a deal where fans could donate their tickets so under privileged kids to a game. These character assassinations by anonymous people (some apparently in the UTAD) is ****ing pathetic.

Lol @ "character assassinations". I'm sure he's a good guy. I've just never been that entertained by his brand of schtick.

It has nothing to do with answering the OP, but more to do with having someone's back that you respect and appreciate. Just my 2 cents...

TB doesn't hide behind a keyboard anonymously with his criticisms. If anybody has an issue with anything that he says he is very accessible. You can text him. You can e-mail him and he will reply. You can call the show and your comments will not be screened.

He was instrumental in getting Tony Robinson back into the UT family. He raises money for good causes constantly. He promoted rounding up unused game tickets and entertaining dozens of at risk kids with parents in prison and hosted them at a Circle Park tailgate. He raised thousands of dollars for the Sevier County fire relief on one day's notice. He raises money and food donations for Fish Hospitality Pantry year round.

You'd think that he'd stolen wives and girlfriends and lunch money from some of the posters making these idiotic, false, hate filled comments on here.

Nobody is making "hate-filled comments." People asked questions about him and they were answered.

There's no doubt he has a good heart and has done a great deal for many in the community. That part has never been in question.

His show is what it is. It is filled with a lot of rumor that is often presented as fact. It is a lot of info from message boards presented as new to his show. He refuses media credentials to UT events to keep himself as "the voice of the fan" but that also causes him to be uninformed on issues that he still discusses like an expert. He allows his callers and his cast of characters to ridicule and run down hosts of other shows on other stations, which is something no other show in town allows. I think some of that is in poor taste, particularly when those things turn personal. He doesn't say those things, but he makes no effort to correct or corral callers when they do.

Clearly he has a following and has made a good living at doing what he does. I have no issue with that. But facts are facts and I'm not going to pretend that his show and his "reporting" are something they aren't just because he's a good man.

Say what you want, but "X" the recruiting guru on his blog is spot on.
I will take what he has to say against most.....even if he gets it from other places. Thing is, he puts it out there before it is widely known.
Simply, and only "X".

Lol. X is one of the worst "sources" out there. I remember his Grumors were a train wreck and completely off the wagon.

Tony doesnt need anyone to defend him but this is about the 5th time you have made this statement as fact & I have to call you on it. Unless your his wife or producer then you have no idea where he gets info from. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Maybe it is from message boards or maybe its from the same source the message boards get their info from. Either way, if you are going to anonymously accuse someone of passing along rumors from message boards as facts then at least say its your opinion this is what he is doing. Otherwise you are guilty of doing what you are accusing him of, passing off your opinion of him as fact.

Basillio is the king of cliches. Makes Butch look like an amateur. Also our best source of misinformation. Claims a lot of sources, but they never pan out.

Damn dude. I think you took this way out of context. People are bigger in different regions/markets and it's not a name that you hear everywhere else. And I'm not talking about "what country is this name from", I mean is he big in East TN? Is he big in the south as a whole? Is he big nationally and I've just missed out? Pretty sure that's the question.

BS. OP with redneck post.

He went to UT, but is originally from up north, I believe Philadelphia. He has long bought time on local radio and sold the show himself. He does a good job firing up a certain segment of the fanbase by ranting on whatever the overreaction of the day is. He claims to have sources, but pretty much culls his information from message boards and spits it back out on his show and website.

Sab?

He certainly does correct and corral callers. The Cattleman/Small Mike/Jim C******* has been banned for about three years now because of his insensitive remarks about Pat Summitt and her illness. He continues to enjoy a forum on WNML (although he might be banned from Doc, Jeff, and Heather).

Usually TB allows callers to fully express their opinions no matter how crazy they might be. You're right, "it is what it is" and it's never been passed off as a news program or primarily "reporting". It's "conversation" and opinions and is easily taken out of context. Rumors do in fact get discussed, but Basilio doesn't attempt to pass them off as facts unless he truly believes them (exhibit A is Dave Hart's "retirement"). Rarely do his guests or co-hosts either. Casual, drive-by listeners may hear callers say something and mistakenly assume that it's a rumor being promoted as fact. The beauty of it though is that he does not screen callers. It's unfiltered and I think that might even be stated in the show opener. He takes jabs at other hosts and shows, but typically follows it up with a qualifier that he's kidding. He takes jabs at Hyams occasionally, but always clarifies that he likes him, points out that JH is a good guy, and respects his work... even correcting callers if warranted. Same thing with Jeff and Heather, but not Dearstone... he doesn't take those self described cheap shots back. It kind of sounds like he has heat with Doc (MD). I can't think of any other local radio broadcasters that he does anything other than take good natured jabs at. He also calls WNML/990/99.1 "State Run Radio" and frequently points out that they are the lap dog of the UTAD. That's true. They have a big financial relationship with UT as the "Flagship Station" for TN sports broadcasts.

Before accusing me of blindly following him, I don't. I have a big problem with his narrative of Barnes sleeping on the job. Just about every day he spews his opinion that CRB isn't even trying to recruit. IMO, he only has 3 scholarships to give out over two entire recruiting cycles, so he's budgeting his time and resources on player development right now.

I'd like to hear more about his refusal to accept credentials from UT. I think that he'd be glad to accept them if there are no strings attached. But if UT dangles them in front of members of the media and then threatens to take them back for not following their required spin then of course he of will say "thanks, but no thanks". He's not going to take their offer of invites to the wine and cheese parties in the air conditioned skybox in exchange for them controlling his message. John Adams wouldn't take the bait either, but they're likely scared of upsetting him (and his employer) and having him stir the pot... so he's probably still on their guest lists.

Again, TB is not a traditional news outlet, it's conversation and his, his guests, his co-hosts, and his callers opinions. When something goes down I, like most (probably including Tony), switch over to WNML for the official word.

I also disagree with your characterization that he only regurgitates message board fodder. He has sources... he's not exclusively pulling information off of internet feeds. He doesn't use message boards because he understands that much of it is false. Twitter, yes. He does consume news items from other information outlets same as everybody else in his business does. Or he might call one of his many friends on UT's approved media member list.

BTW, you left off the most important word. He claims to be the voice of the "common" fan.

Bruce Pearls first year Tony Basilio got a bus ride package together to go to the games Tennessee played in the NCAA tournament. I bought the package to go watch us in round of 32 which we lost to Wichita St. But that trip I saw how much he loves UT and apparently hated Duke as they played in the same session albeit different region. Duke played George Washington that day and Tony and a bunch on our bus bought colonials foam hats. But the stories he told of watching UT games made me respect him more.

Just curious.

He's the guy that a few years ago went on a homophobic, anti gay marriage rant on 1180 AM. The station was subsequently hacked and down for a day or 2. He was removed from the lineup around that time. I think he's back now?

Just some radio dude at remote locations cheerleading for sushi and wing places.

I change to 990 whenever he comes on.
