I'm not really tapped into our basketball community. To illustrate the point, I live in AZ and I just watched the Texas game this morning without knowing the outcome. I was curious who people think our best player is right now. Not who the best prospect/talent is, but who is our MVP this year? We have a bunch of good guys with about equal value, so it's a tough call. You can change your vote as the season progresses. I'm only allowing the guys who have played 500 minutes as poll options and then JJJ (please don't vote for him until he's put in more minutes). I was going to keep him off, but want people to be able to switch to him later.

I go Nkamhoua

I feel like the thread title and poll question are different questions. I answered Z for the poll question (MVP), him being the only really PG on the roster, playing terrific D, and scoring and assisting at high rates. I think a healthy Vescovi is our best player though, on account of his all around game

Edit: ok now they’re the same, before the title was best player. I think Z is the MVP so far

Wow, Zeigler running away with it. Kinda shocked, but probably shouldn't be. I just put more value on size than most people, I suppose.

ZZ is the heart and soul of this team. He is the court leader and sets the tone on the defensive end.

I just think short-guard thievery gets too much credit (generally speaking). The backbone of the D are the guys with size holding opponents to 34% from the field (1st in the NCAA). We're actually not good at creating turnovers (331st). Vescovi and Zeigler get steals for themselves, but big guards who trap people and create steals for others are the types of guys who make you a top turnovers team. He might be the emotional leader, but the other guys are the ones shutting scorers down and helping Zeigler when his size is a problem.

Ziggs, without question. To me, Nkamhoua and Vescovi are 2A and 2B, really close between them

Woof, do you watch the games? That Zeigler take is a bad one, that dude shuts down opposing guards pretty much by himself, every guard gets help defense but Zeigler does more 1-1 than probably anyone.

Yeah, and I notice how often Zeigler has to be helped. All a guard has to do is get him on their hip and he can't do anything because of the lack of size.

Let's face it, there are knocks on all of these guys. They're not perfect players (who is?). I'm just acknowledging weaknesses. I'd like to see more rebounds out of Nakhouma (my pick).

All of our guards get help, that’s what good defenses do, our bigs also get help from our guards digging down often…Zeigler does a better job 1-1 than any one of our guards, add in the frequency he covers full court by himself and this is a bad take.

Of course everybody gets help. But literally every opponent has a guard that can impose his physicality on Zeigler and get to the basket. Not many teams have a guy that can do that to Nkamhoua or JJJ, you know?

1st Half at Miss St, it was easy to say Vescovi was our MVP and our team was abysmal without him... After that half, it's been ZZ, no question.

Right, so using it as a negative doesn’t make much sense…like I said Zeigler is our best 1-1 defender, there’s a reason coaches voted him all-defense.

It does because he gets the most help, by necessity. I do not think 1 on 1 defense is why he made all SEC. I think it's because he's a thief, he's great fighting around screens, and it's easy to see that he's trying so hard.

Explain how size has value in basketball?
Explain how size applies to Ziegler being our MVP. I realize size has a value in basketball just like any other sport. But so does shooting ability, talent, leadership, and countless other factors. So we discount him being an mvp because of size? Makes sense.

Every player has attributes, both positive and negative. When determining player value, you weigh the positive against the negative. That's how it factors.
