Who is going to be the second receiver?

We will have Byrd, Williams, Calloway, and Johnson all having good years.

I know Byrd is a popular choice, but I think he'd be a better cb. I think Callaway breaks out this year. I'm thinking 40 catches 700 yards. There is some good young receiver talent with Callaway, Johnson, maybe Williams, and the freshmen.

I think Josh Smith puts it all together this year.

It won't surprise me if Josh Smith is the primary punt returner.

Lord help us then, every pr will be an adventure until he gets benched or more likely injured which has been where his position has mostly been. He's done little but bobble the ball since arriving on The Hill. His career stats appear about like other wrs in the SEC season stats. He must be a practice beast as he gets a lot of pt and balls thrown his way with little production. I scratch my head at people and the staff promoting this kid, I don't see it. Prove me wrong Josh, I'd love it!

Josh Smith could be that guy. He kind of reminds me of Lucas Taylor who had a very good 2007 season. Neither one is particularly explosive, but can be very efficient. Josh is actually probably more explosive than Lucas Taylor was. If somehow we could have Byrd as a Donte Stallworth to Jujuan Jennings "Kelly Washington" that would obviously be ideal. I know that's a pie in the sky, but a guy can dream.

If I were like alot of people throwing out guesses, I would agree with Byrd going to CB IF and only if I believed the Vols will continue to play the 4-2-5 defense. But with Warren coaching the DBs up and assuming Wiggins will start, I see Gaulden lining up at the other corner and a third LB starting in a base 4-3. Therefore, I see Byrd remaining a receiver.

Callaway impressed me when they finally brought him in, so I feel it is between him and Byrd at the moment with Johnson and Williams making it as competitive as it has been in a few years. But I think a huge deciding factor will be which of these guys is most willing to run block. That guy will get more opportunities.

For some reason, I feel you owe both Byrd and Jennings (especially Jennings) an apology. Jennings is already better than Washington ever was, and I have greater expectations for Byrd than how Stallworth turned out. Stop dreaming, you are giving me nightmares.

As to Smith, I am waiting to see how his legal issue plays out. Until that kind of stuff is resolved, I place guys like him in limbo just in case that blows up on us.

Based upon the shortened O&W game, it could be Eli Wolf as TEs were targeted early and often.

I would say the one to look out for is Latrell Williams, a real speedster who just needs to hone his catching skills a bit.

I expect to see Calloway and Byrd make huge strides just like Pig did in his second season.

The Wild Card is Josh Smith: He obviously wasn't himself last season and we found out why with the off-season surgery. If he fully heals, this could be a blessing for the team. Plus we need somebody out there to beeotch slap the opposing DBs!

Sorry you feel that way. Neither one of them have performed at the level Washington or Stallworth did during the 2001 season. Don't take that as me disrespcting either guy, as Jennings is fast approaching being one of my all time favorite Vols. He's a freaking warrior.

Uhhh, what?

Just because you're still pi$$ed about a guys attitude does not give license for history revisionism. Washington was nearly unstoppable at times. JJ has not done so YET. This year may be it, but you said "already".

I just remember what happened when it came time to declare for the draft at the end of that season. I lost all respect for Washington over that. It took away from how I remember his performance. And it seemed that was the beginning of the program being much more about getting into the league and much less about being a championship team. I guess you might have been a student then, and it seemed a great time to you.

But I just felt even then that the Vols were missing something. They just didn't have the mindset that won a national championship. Even though we still were getting talented guys, they did not impress me as a team. And as for Stallworth, well maybe I find it unlucky to compare a player we have now to a guy with the manslaughter stigma. Same reasons I didn't like it the few times folks compared Barnett to Leonard Little.
Maybe I will get over it one of these years, but I doubt it.

Just haven't seen enough of Brandon yet, plus he's coming off the injury and couldn't participate in the Spring, while Callaway was there and played really well, and that's why his name is popping up. People know of Josh Smith too, and even though he's not been very good and often injured, people are familiar with him, so his name comes up as well.

Plenty of us think Brandon make good contributions this year and has great potential to be very good here......just difficult to see how the second WR behind JJ is anybody other than Byrd right now imo.

I dont care about spring football...Spring football is about other guys getting reps and getting healthy...Brandon played last season..nothing against callaway but why he didnt get in games last season? Brandon still got summer and fall camp to prove himself again..

Dude, I'm with you on Brandon. Just trying to explain why he's being overlooked at this point in favor of others. Most don't particularly recall Brandon's 7 catches last season, most of which were vs Tenn Tech. But Marquez is front of mind due to spring practice, whether it's legit or not.

Either way, I think Byrd is the #2 guy behind JJ this season with Brandon and Marquez filling out the WR rotation.

I don't care who returns punts as long as the results aren't like last year's first. TN blows out Appy had Cam not coughed up that gift.

TRUE TRUE TRUE, we had 3 and outed them they were ready to give up but the punt fumble gave new life and great field position.

I too feel like it will be JS he has the best return yardage of anyone returning that returned punts. Also if you fumble some in practice they will be wary of having that change the game. So he is the safe bet.

Ready to give up? It was their first possession of the game and season. I don't think they were quite ready to throw in the towel.

I think Vols have a great chance to be much better at wr. Hopefully they can stay healthy.
