"The punter competition is still open. The Vols had a three-man competition at the beginning of the preseason with senior Maryland transfer Nathan Renfro, redshirt sophomore Trevor Daniel and freshman Tommy Townsend.

Jones said the competition hasn't narrowed.

"It's ongoing," Jones said. "And all three individuals are elevating their game and it'll be the individual who continues to display confidence, but also continue to display the consistency that we need. But all three individuals are doing a very, very good job."

I'm with you, consistency is what you want from your punter

and I wonder who the punt returner will be ? I hope it isn't Sutton again,he does a lot of things really damn well, but returner isn't one of them

that and he doesn't need to be on the field returning punts, from an injury point of view

Trevor Daniel is my pick...kid has been booming kicks, especially in the open practice...but he may not be as consistent as the other 2. I just know he seems to have the bigger leg.

I agree, I think Trevor has the best chance at flipping the field for us.

Hyams thinks Renfro. Potentially a pooch punter and deep punter in games though.

His consistency is why I'm thinking he get's the gig. He might not be booming them but if he is automatic 40 yards then that works for me.

However....Renfro was not consistent last year at Maryland. His 40 yard average last year at Maryland would have put him at next to last in the SEC punting.

Renfro, whom Edsall has described as inconsistent since the spring, averaged just 32.2 yards on his final five punts against Ohio State on Oct. 4 and averaged only 37.8 yards on nine punts during the Terps’ win over Iowa on Saturday.

One punt against Iowa traveled just 19 yards. Another — which was snapped from the Hawkeyes’ 38-yard line — sailed out of the end zone for a touchback at a key moment of the fourth quarter when Maryland was depending on Renfro to pin Iowa inside its 20-yard line.

Renfro had the least leg among among the three of them, but all of his kicks were the exact same (40-45ish yards). Daniels had the longest and most hang time on his kicks. Townsend was right there with him though.

The only thing that absolutely kills me about CBJ is his use of the word individual-individuals.....

Come on coach it's okay to say guy or guys or anything else besides individual...

This is football it's okay to be laid back every now and then and have fun...

JMO IMO

Ps. Before the hate rolls in I love CBJ! Juse not his use of the word individual-individuals...

I'm betting on Tommy T to win. He'll get his head and foot right. :)

GO VOLS!

At least once in his career they have to fake it and try to get this kid in the endzone. For Kessling saying Touchdown Tennessee Thommy Townsthen if nothing else. Too good of a name to keep outta the chiggarboards.

I wonder if we could RS Townsend and use the others. Then have him for four more years. Not sure how the schollies work at the position.
