I remember as a kid in the 90’s I was obsessed with that magazine. They were extremely successful as well, so much that they had to create EGM2, a sister magazine.

They further branched out into US Official PlayStation Magazine, who would send you a demo disc every month of upcoming games.

Apparently they are still around in some capacity, but obviously the internet has killed it’s presence in the gaming world. Shame too, because they were once an absolute dynasty. What a great time that was.

I looked forward every month to getting all 3 copies of those magazines, as well as Tips and Tricks. Tips and Tricks was basically a cheat code magazine. Funny enough, it was part of Larry Flynt’s publishing company.

I always bought it off the news stand. But it was my go to video game mag for years, once I outgrew Nintendo Power.

Same. I subscribed to Nintendo Power starting with the 2nd magazine (the one with Castlevania 2 on the cover that parents griped about) and got it for years. Once playstation came out Nintendo kinda took a back seat.

The internet ended up killing both I guess. I did have Game Informer in the 2000s but only because Game Stop gave it away. I kind of miss the hard copy mags.

I had Nintendo Power for the longest time, I think they have a podcast version now?

Somehow I had Game Informer for a while as well, can’t remember why or how I got it.

Anyway, then I learn how companies pay for good reviews and I kinda lost interest to consuming any video game news.

I liked EGM but Diehard Gamefan was my jam! It had THE best screenshots of games and they always had great articles. Their reviews always seemed to lineup with my gaming tastes too.

But yeah I was a gaming magazine junkie! I bought them all! EGM, DH Gamefan, Nintendo Power, Next Generation, Game Informer, Gamepro, PC Magazine etc.

Oh man EGM was awesome. Back before the internet this is how I got most of my video game information. Also remember how great their April Fool's Day gags were. The early ones were big time trolling that were actually believable. I always loved flipping to their reviews section. EGM2 was pretty good but didn't seem to last long because around that time the web started ramping up. They also had the 1Up Website. Now it exists online only as EGN Now.

The other big magazine around that time was GamePro. I always saw it as a decent yet inferior magazine. My biggest problem with it is it always seemed to give every game a good review.

The earliest EGM I remember buying was about Double Dragon for the NES. I was at the grocery store with my mom and I was bored and saw it and she let me get it so I'd have something to do while she shopped.

EGM was by far the best gaming magazine during the 90s and early 00s. I felt like I knew all of the guys who worked on the staff. Getting a new EGM in the mail was so awesome because it was the only way of knowing about upcoming games back then. I would read them cover to cover multiple times, even the ads (which were actually pretty cool back in the day).

God I miss those days!

I remember thinking the guys who worked at my local Electronics Boutique were the coolest dudes on the planet. I remember being about 11 years old and having a long conversation with one of them (who was probably 17 but in my mind he was 30) about FF7. He actually took the time to geek out over it with me, as it had just released.

Spot on about the ads. Those old video game ads used to either be hilarious, or get you fired up for the upcoming release of a game.

This makes me miss the days of Ultima, Eye of the Beholder, All the Sierra and Origin games.

There was something really cool about the old super VGA games and early Nintendo games days.

Yeah PC gaming in the 90's/early 00's was so much fun. Back then PC truly felt like a unique platform apart from consoles. It had an actual gaming identity with its own unique library and own developers. While consoles had Capcom, Konami, Sega, Nintendo, Squaresoft, Enix, Namco, etc. PC had ID, Sierra, Westwood Studios, Bullfrog, Bethesda, Origin, Lucas Arts, etc. Sure, there was some crossover here and there but it wasnt as homogeneous as it is now.

Yep. My go-tos were GamePro, EGM, and PC Gamer to round it out. Those were good times, back in the heyday of the cartridge consoles!

By the time I reached high school, I was much more into PC games so I only subscribed to PC Gamer at that point (but would pick up a copy of the others off the rack once in a while.

I remember PS Magazine with the demo disks.

My best friend and I played the Tony Hawk demo religiously until the game came out.
