I hope we have no classless thugs on the team. Thuggery is nothing to celebrate.

Not thugs, just tough-nosed, "nasty" guys. Think Doug Atkins, Dale Jones, Al Wilson, Mickey Marvin, etc, etc. They weren't dirty players, certainly not thugs, but they played with the right attitude needed to win titles imho. Gotta have those guys.

I agree with you, but that's not what the OP described. He described dirty players who don't care about the rules or sportsmanship and try to injure people. Thugs.

Think of it this way, Geezer. Talking about guys who can be perfectly controlled off the field, model citizens, contributors to the community, nicest guys you ever met, then can flip a mental switch on game day, become just nasty and brutish.

I agree with you that the OP's definition went too far, when he talked about eye gouging, shredding knees, and intentionally injuring people. That is way outside of good sportsmanship. It's just flat out wrong.

But for most of us in the thread, think we're talking short of that kind of thuggery. Just good, old-fashioned mean and nasty attitude on the field. Like KB said, the Doug Atkins kind.
